Interesting behaviour with my reloads

Hey HeavyTread, followed all your advice and taking you up on your offer again :) Here are the results:

The temperature was just above zero which is 7 degrees warmer than last time and what a difference. There's absolutely no soot on any of the cases with starting load. Zeroed the rifle in with 20 rounds loaded with 46gr of powder, then proceeded with testing. Funny enough, 1st sighter group was about 3", but then they tightened up to about 1.5" which is consistent with the later results.

Total of 13 groups. First group is with 42.5gr of IMR 4895, and I went with 0.5gr increments this time, so group 13 is 48.5gr powder.

Thanks in advance!

Hey, those look a bunch better! 7-9 look like you might be making some nice cloverleaf groups with 3 shots. You shot those round robin, though? I think you should maybe try some "diamond" shaped targets too. For me at least it is hard to keep a steady reference aim point on a circle, especially with a lower powered scope. Whereas the diamond gives you something to align your crosshairs with.

Why are 7-9 so much better? What is different. Did you clean barrel better this time? Shoot slower?

Pick one of 7 to 9 and you are done testing.

Yes, with an old Sovietski rifle and less than top quality bullets you are done. The rifle seems quite accurate. It would be interesting to put it through its paces with better bullets and IMR4064 and IMR4320, both of which are good performers in the 7.62 Russian.

Pick 8 it will be most reliable. You won't need to worry about it if you're using a powder measure since 7 and 9 are still accurate loads. I would actually go between 7 and 8 I'd your can because 9 goes higher, but either way, 8 would be my load based on those targets, hands down
