Interesting new little carbine from Kimber...

Kimber's on their game these days I find myself lusting over a few of their models. If I was looking for a quality ultralight this new one would get a look for sure. In the mean time I'll get by with my Salvage Lightweight Hunter. lol

I was just cruising Kimber's web site and found they are building this new little 18" barreled carbine called the Adirondack. Chamberings are 7mm-08 and .308Win and claimed weight is 4lbs 13oz. The MSRP is also ~$300 less than the Mountain Ascent.

I'll take one in 7-08, thanks! I definitely like what Kimber is offering... now if I only had a bit of extra funds and time... but that would make a lovely deer rifle for the Island.

That is very nice! I already have a Montana in .338 Fed so won't be buying one of these but it is tempting.

Maybe I could justify it by saying "its for the kids".

Great minds think alike. ;)

You could even swap out the 1" decelerator for a .6" version to shorten the LOP to 13.25" for the wee ones. No, I haven't put any thought into this. :)

Sorry to be a spoiler .. but ..
Two weeks ago, I handled a Kimber Montana and a Winchester M70 FWT at Wholesale Spurts
Both were in stainless ... and the difference?

1st of all .. let me say that I wanted the Kimber .. AND my wife said I could spend the money!!!

Ok .. the Kimber was lighter in weight .. but after the salesman removed the stocks for me,
that difference was only the stocks .. the actions/barrels were basically identical
(no surprise, given that the Kimber is a WinM70 copy)

I carefully examined the separate Kimber stock. Yes, it weighed almost nothing. But it looked and felt "cheap".
I compared it to the WinM70 stock - which, after 20min, I decided I preferred.

On the whole, I decided that the 2 rifles were equal.
Except that the Kimber was priced many $100s more than the Winchester.

Disappointed, I walked out without buying anything.

My 2 cents, for whatever that's worth.

Doesn't the Winchester have a wood stock? While the actions are similar to look at, the Kimber is greatly scaled down and weighs a fraction of the Winchester action. There are only so many ways to skin a cat, many actions "look" similar. If you were to weigh the barrelled actions of both, you'd get a surprise. The only similarities these guns possess is that both actions are based on the Mauser and they're stainless, that's it.

Kimbers aren't cheaply made, I can assure you of that, nor are they low quality. Afraid you mistook light for cheap. I'm very familiar with both Kimbers and new model Winchesters, like them both. However, the Kimber is a substantially lighter rifle of equal durability, and has substantially better bottom metal than the Winchester. Safeties equal, controlled round feed equal, weight a big win for Kimber, bottom metal a win for Kimber. Arguably the Kimber trigger wins as well compared to the new Model 70.

I knew that I'd catch flack from that post .. LOL
I went through a similar debate when I was first looking at buying a Montana. Initially I planned on purchasing one in .308 but after thinking it through and weighing all the pro's and con's, I decided to save a lot of money and go with the M70 Featherweight.

Shortly after I bought a Montana but in .338 Fed because I already had a .308 (well a couple actually but didn't need another).

I love my M70 Featherweight but there is no comparing it to a Kimber Montana. There are some big differences and Ardent did a good job of pointing them out so I won't repeat.
