Guys, I was reading a Time Life WWII Book today, for any of you with the set and want to look for yourself, it was ( China-Burma-India) page #163. The caption reads:
{From the Balconey of one of the temples on Pagoda Hill,British soldiers cautiously look out over Mandalay and Fort Dufferin on the right. The smoke is from a bomb that had fallen outside the beseiged fortress.} The one soldier is holding a No4mk1 with cut down forewood, like so many sporters we see floating around. I guess he felt that he needed a lighter rifle.
The photo was taken around March of 1945 when the fighting was taking place there, from what I can gather reading the book. First time I ever saw an actual altered No4mk1 in any pictures before. I thought some of you other lee enfield lovers would want to see it. I wonder if armorers did field mods and issued cut down rifles to the troops in the tropics before No5's were being issued or if soldiers would just do the dirty work themselves.
