Some of you may remember a post a few days ago asking for values of a few rifles. One in particular appealed to me right off the bat:
A 1979 production Remington 700 in .308 Win with a 24" heavy barrel and a fixed 20x Leupold with AO and a target dot.
The crappy cell phone picture does not do it justice and I will get better ones tomorrow. The metal is 100%, I can't find a blemish in the blue anywhere. The stock is in very good condition with just a few minor dings. I've never digged the white spacers and gloss finish, but I've come around to it on this rifle. It suits it. There are a few neat areas of figure in the walnut and the fit and finish is excellent (what happened Remington?)
When I took the rifle out of the stock to clean I found out that the receiver and bottom metal are both glass bedded and whoever did it did it well. The chamber area of the barrel channel is bedded and the rest is free floating.
I was heading to the range today and needed to shoot this rifle. I had lots of .308 brass kicking around, but I could not find my dies (maybe I sold them? Can't remember.) I did find 15 rounds of .308 with 178 grain A MAX and a very mild load of 39 grains of Varget. I must have loaded these for a Norc M305 I used to own. So I took them.
Got to the range and pulled out the .308 first. Hoping that the scope was close I took a shot. 6" low and 2" left. So I dialed in the adjustments and decided to shoot a group. Took a shot, a little over and inch low and slightly right. Took another... Not on the paper, great the scope must be screwed, took another, yep scope is pooched it's not on the paper.
So I walked up and noticed the hole was slightly oblong. No way I thought. Went back and shot 2 more groups. All were at the same point of aim/impact. They measured .457" and .610". Adjusted the scope to hit point of aim and shot a .545" group. This of course meant the scope wasn't bad. I had actually shot a 1 hole group after only ever taking 1 shot through the rifle with some mild loads worked up for a Norc semi auto. My last two rounds hit the 300 yard gong.
So the one hole group was a bit of a fluke because the others were around .5". However I can't wait to see the potential of this rifle when I get a load worked up and tuned for it. The first group measures .109".
