Worried about Safety? Buy a Handgun
It will come as a surprise to many Canadians to learn they can legally buy a handgun, keep it in their bedroom and use it for self defence. Liberal government propaganda -- cheered on by anti-gun zealots such as Wendy Cukier -- have tried to obscure the fact self-defence with a firearm is legal in Canada.
You will first need to obtain a possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL), which involves quite a few steps, including: studying for and passing a long-gun written and practical exam, studying and passing a restricted weapon (handgun) written and practical exam, paying three different fees, getting signatures of people who have known you for some time attesting to your good character, getting a signed passport-size photo, getting your spouse's permission, passing a police check and waiting 28 days (usually longer).
After all this, you will still need to buy the weapon, buy the ammunition, buy a gun safe, buy a second locked cabinet, join a gun club and get a permission to transport permit to move the gun from the dealer to you, and from you to a gun range and back.
Sound like a lot? It's complex and takes time, but the test is not hard if you've prepared for it. The only real difficulty I can think of is that some women may have some difficulty pulling the slide on a large automatic, which they may have to do in the practical part of the restricted weapon test.
You have obtained your PAL, got the permission to transport licences and have purchased your weapon. You can do this on-line from a Canadian gun dealer (such as Reliable Gun & Tackle) in Vancouver and they will ship it to you by courier. You go to the range you've joined and learn how to use your weapon. You clean it upon your return from the range and store it in your bedroom gun safe together with one or more loaded magazines. I recommend gun safes that can be opened by pushbutton in the dark.
Finally you install a deadbolt lock on your bedroom door (there's actually a lot more you can do at homeinvasion.ca but this is the minimum).
Now the reason for all this. If a home invader, burgler, ex-spouse or deranged teenager breaks into your home and starts pounding on your door, you can open your safe, take out your pistol, load the magazine, #### the slide and shoot the intruder the moment he breaks through your door. You feared for your life and were cornered in your bed. You did the only thing you could do to protect yourself. Case dismissed.
Now, here's a bonus for reading all the way to the end. If you are a woman, I will buy you a 9mm handgun with a value of up to $800 if you are the first to show me proof that you have a PAL and that you applied for it after October 3, 2006. Why a woman? Because I think Canadian women generally need to shuck the victim mentality they so often espouse, and start taking control of their lives.
And I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is.
