Interesting short stroking issue

Hey guys, I'm having an issue with my m305 short stroking at winter temps only. Gas plug is tight and everything is in order and I run synthetic snowmobile grease on it. The only thing I can think of is that at those temperatures of -15 the metal has contracted enough that it must be binding up somewhere. I just don't want to disassemble the thing outside.

Anyone run into this at cold temps?

How well does the action cycle by hand? If it was binding I'd think that you could feel this when racking the rifle.

If everything is OK mechanically, I'd take a look at the gas port for blockages/alignment (spindle valve maybe), tilt-test the gas piston and then try different ammo.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input guys. I used to run lubriplate, but switched out to a light coating of low temperature snowmobile grease. I just did a thorough disassembly and cleaning and re-lubed. We'll see how she functions today when I'm out hunting.

if your going to be using it in -15- 20 for real, I don't grease anything. doesn't matter what kinda grease in that temp it will slow things down. light 10 w synthetic oil very spareingly

I just found out where its binding up. The bottom of the oprod was rubbing on the stock. Filed down the high spots on the stock and now the action is like butter now. I will give it a go with a light coating of grease as it's only supposed to be around zero today. If I head out when it's really cold I'll run it almost dry

I use to clean out any oil and use graphite when I was running them in that cold.
Lockease works great.

Is the stock a Boyd's? Contrary to popular opinion, commercial wood is not strictly a "drop in" replacement - some minor fitting required. Glad you got it sorted out.

In these temperatures I would recommend lithium spray grease and or light oils. Also be sure that the cavity in the piston and gas plug are clean of carbon build up and completely dry.
