Interesting story. Part Canadian in Vietnam War

There was a young man from s sask joined the marines and went to viet nam.Remembered here for wearing his dress uniform before he went over. Fought and returned. Still alive and living in BC.

Many did, either out of a sense of adventure or principles. In both WW1 and WW2, many Americans volunteered for service in both the Cdn Army and RCAF. The US was a late arrival in both those wars; almost 3 years in WW1 and 2 years in WW2.

I had a teacher that married a 2 tour marine, both from Lacombe Ab. He was still "active" when they married and as far as i know still reside one the good side of the border.

A lot of people dont know that there was a contingent of Canadian soldiers shipped to Nam back at the start of the American involvement in that country. I knew one of the Canadians that was there. They were involved in combat at some time because this guy had scars to prove his gut wound....and lots of photo's that he had of jungle operations & hospital time after the wound. They weren't there very long but they were there. He claimed it was never made public that they were there.

I question that there were Canadian troops sent to Vietnam at any point, other than those serving with the International Control Commission 1954-73 or the International Commission of Control and Supervision 1973/74. I knew people who served with both of these organizations.

I served in the Army through the Vietnam period and there was never any discussion of Canadian units being sent to Vietnam. If so, it would have been big news inside and outside the Army during and afterwards. Its hard to keep the lid on things like this, and it would have been dynamite for any Canadian government to have done this.

There was some leaning forward in the trenches in the Army though. I recall a mock Vietnamese village being set up at the Infantry School in Borden for training. I also remember jungle type patrol training and use of the Minnissing Swamp, near Camp Borden, for jungle training.

As per the above, there was no Canadian military involvement in the Vietnam War proper. Canadians fought as US members, or were there as part of the ICC/ICCS, which was not combat.

What he said.

Turd1 was a real commie lover and wouldn't have any involvement in the war except to ship supplies to North Vietnam.

There were a number of documented sightings of Canadian registered ships in Haiphong harbour at various times during the war.

Supposedly, they were there to bring "medical supplies" to the Commies.

International Commission for Control and Supervision with the initials ICCS..................which I believe stood for "I Can,t Control Sh!t " according to folks who went to VN.
