Can anyone help me and tell me what this is exactly? The only Mk. XVI I can find is a naval artillery piece. It is about 18X6X4 inches. Thanks, Dave

I lean towards it being torpedo related

Mk 16 Direct Contact Pistol ??

What does the inside of the box look like ?

As mentioned, it was a container for depth charge 'pistols' (basically the hydrostatic fuze for the depth charge). The Mk XVI pistol was usually associated with the 250 lb Mk XI depth charge, a pretty common air dropped depth charge which came into British service in 1942 and was a mainstay for many decades afterward.
