Hello,
is the above mentioned considered a "Secure Locking Device" whilst transporting and storing?

Does one still need a trigger lock or will the I.H.K.L suffice?

What's your take on it?

cheers

Yes they are considered a secure locking device.

Should it ever malfunction the whole locking system can be removed simply by removing the side plate and pulling the hammer out.

I quit using the one on my 617 for fear of it failing in the locked state.

I do believe the regs call for an external locking device, so I'm not quite sure these things actually meet the letter of the law.

It does, the RCMP says so, the Ontario CFO told me so and so did the CSSA.

The manual states "secure locking device", and doesn't mention external at all. Don't know where I got that notion from. My error.

I'm told there is a plug that can be purchased in order to permanently remove the abomination. Does anyone know if S&W ship up here or a Canadian dealer that would help out, I'm just tired of looking at it every time I pick it up. That is what should not be!

You'd still see it, even with a plug in the side of the frame. I really don't understand why so many people hate the lock, if you don't like it don't use it.

Lawyers had nothing to do with it, some S&W revolvers don't have locks, it's also rumored that S&W will be producing more models without locks in the future.

"In 2000 the Clinton administration reached an agreement with Smith & Wesson, to end federal and state lawsuits, in exchange for marketing and design changes by the company. Some of the items Smith & Wesson agreed to were; to sell guns with locks, to build the locks in the weapons within two years, implement smart gun technology, and take ballistic fingerprints of its guns. Clinton called the deal a “ major victory for America’s families.”The NRA and other gun rights groups heavily criticized the settlement calling Smith & Wesson’s actions “a sell-out”, with the NRA calling the agreement “”tantamount to back door blackmail”. Smith & Wesson’s ownership changed in 2001 and the agreement fell apart after George W. Bush came to office and supported lawsuit protection for gun manufactures. However, Smith & Wesson continues to sell guns with internal locks." - Quoted from:

@ Outlander;

If it's removed and plugged how would it still be seen?

I hate the lock, and I don't use it. I hate the lock because it's unnecessary, it could (conceivably) jam up the action of the gun, and because its my gun, and I wish it weren't there...I don't own a series 80 1911 for a lot of the same reasons (my 1911's are series 70's). I could not however find a 5" full underlug 629 (.44mag) without the friggin' lock.

So, do you know if Smith will sell and ship to me without any boarder BS, or do you know a Canadian dealer who has them?

I hate the lock too! this is what I found on the S&W forum. I have not contacted the guy yet, because removing the lock is not or real importance tome at this point.
If anybody orders from him, please let s know how it went.

cheers

Also purchased with no issues. Stainless plug on a stainless gun looks much better than the factory plug.

Skill level 6 of 10 (it change your own oil and spark plugs you can do it.) ;)
