hi - thought that i'd cross-post this from my introduction ...

hi folks, this is my introduction to cgn.

i just purchased an m305 (can you believe it arrived on wednesday, i got the oil out of it on thursday, and was happily mounting the scope on friday in anticipation of going to the range on saturday when ... gun ban). intent with the rifle is to do double duty; my 30-06 hunting rifle was running a 165 grain bullet as jack of all trades and i wanted to move it to a heavier bullet for longer ranges and bigger game (without having to go to a magnum cartridge) which meant i would need a different bush gun for knocking around, shots under 200 yards, back of the truck kind of stuff. also, i just got into ipsc pistol shooting and wanted a carbine for some light competition (short, magazine fed, quick target acquisition) but not look like a lost mall ninja when out in the bush.

so, i settled on the norinco m305 socom - basically a m14 shorty with a socom compensator. what i am in the process of building is a chicom socom scout. so far i've hit the black plastic stock with a couple coats of beauti-tone camo coat tan, removed front and rear sights, installed an m14.ca op rod spring guide and scout hand guard, and a burris 2x7 scout scope in the scout position. and lubricated as per tonyben. ps, for what it's worth, my scope rings are 0.355" high and there is about a 0.125" gap between scope and receiver, so you could go as low as say a 0.25" scope ring with that combination of scope and hand guard.

intent is to install a 'butt lite' butt plate to lose some more weight (don't need a cleaning kit onboard for hunting or at the range) some burris xtr low rings (currently just using some chinese knock-offs i had sitting around) some actual 5-round magazines (never understood carrying around a heavy 20-round mag digging into your bag that only holds 5-rounds) and, if i can find it, a gas lock from a standard-length m305 (ie, one without a dovetail for a front sight) and some shims. i'll leave the indexing of the barrel, unitising of the gas system, and checking of headspace to a gunsmith (especially given that my bolt appears to be cast so may require replacing ...).

so far it is a bit heavy but nothing to whine about. the scout scope points VERY well (much quicker than a scope in standard position imho) and doesn't make the rifle too front heavy (but that may change when i get the 2 lb butt plate off it). i'll post a pic when done (if allowed?) and get it on the scale for final weight (and body fat %). and, if i am deemed worthy, i'll have a wtb ask up for the mags, gas lock, shims, etc.

thanks.

yes; 10-dot cast (MIM) bolt. intent is to get a few shots through the rifle and inspect how the bolt is wearing. timing should coincide with my next trip down south and visit to a gunsmith. will have to see what access to usgi bolts is like in the 'new reality'.

in my case i have until a suitable replacement can be acquired. uncertain how the man is going to define suitable, however. presume affordability plays into it, so they'll have to buy my norinco back first.

well, lucky until i try to maintain it or sight it in, at which point i'll probably find myself in a semantic battle with the red serge.

so, some questions about this rifle. the ejector seems to have a mind of it's own, chucking brass forward, to the side, and sometimes into my face. other things to note; takes a bit of effort to lock the bolt into battery when chambering the first round, and the brass is pretty nicked up after a tour through this thing. and one stovepipe after 50 rounds. common behaviour or no? thnks.
