IPSC ammo practice question

I am new to IPSC competitions. How important is it to practice with the same ammunition you use in competitions, such as the same primers, type of powder and weight of projectile?

Depends on who you ask. Some will say that if you shoot a heavier load in practice you will be able to shoot your lighter match load more efficiently. This idea has some merit, although you would have to shoot the match load a little before a major match to make sure you are dialed into the timing on it and the sight settings. For myself, reloading can be a real chore when you have a busy lifestyle...as most of ous do....and for that reason I don't want to spend valuable reloading time changing over my press settings to a heavier bullet charge. Accordingly, I shoot in practice what I shoot in matches.

I don't general switch anything. Same ammo for practice as for matches. I usually check over my match ammo to look for anything not properly made. I use Combat masters and I have not found anything after 13,000 + rounds.

Same ammo for both,it ensures your loads will perform on match day as well as will make the desired P/F under all types of conditions. (Not that one should load that close to thge line anways..but you never know)

why would you not train with the ammo you compete with?

On P.E.I. ammunition and supplies for reloading can at times be hard to find. I recently purchased some 147gr bullets from Sean at Freedom Ventures but I have never been able to get anything locally but 115gr and occasionally 124grain.

From my experience it's sometimes hard to find anything locally for a good price. That's why I always try to go in on bulk orders from Combat Masters.

...and to answer your question....I usually use the same for training and matches. No surprises that way.

cost and availability (latter more than the former). I compete with Winchester 124gr WinClean - it is VERY hard to find reliably in high volumes. So I'd practice with something like Wolf reloads, or more recently combat masters...

As ye sow, so shall ye reap!

As ye Train, so shall ye FIGHT!

I.E. It is always preferable to have the same "feel" in practice as in competition.

Just curious about Combat Masters... are these reloaded ammo? or just bullet heads. Who supply these ammo in ON?

Reloaded ammo or bullets....your choice.

I'm not aware that they have others selling the stuff for them, but I'm usually wrong. We just deal with them directly (phone or email).

I too shoot Combat Masters Remanufactured Ammunition exlusively for practice and matches in 40 S&W.

Call Kurt at 1-866-933-0009 and give Combat Masters (BDX) a try.

BTS,

If you guys got a range up and running and put on a match we could bring your bullets to tyou.

Hint hint.

:D

Guess what....we have an outdoor range.
We still have to work on the match thing.

I shoot the same 'homebrew' full-power ammunition for practice and competition. I think it is important to have the same feeling to develop some kind of 'muscle memory'.

The only difference between my practice ammo and comp ammo is that I do not chamber-check the practice ammo, because I can afford a jam or two, while I can't during a match.

we were there last year for a level2 just north of Summerside. Tried their best and the match was just great except for the 2ft of downpours that made it impossible to keep anything dry. Had to cancel the match. Hopefully Rob and Shawn and the other fellows will have another match this summer!!
I have been to their range a few times, they have one large U shaped berm but they make good use of the range.

I had the same opinion until my XD-9 fired out of battery with some of my practice ammo. Luckily I was wearing gloves at the time, and they were puff 125PF loads. The only damage to the pistol was blowing the extractor in half.
I now chamber check all of my pistol ammo with a dillon case gauge.

+1.
I have used this (9mm 124gr- 134pf) exclusively for the last year or so, plus I used the .40 ammo in my Edge, VERY nice. NO problems!
This year I may go to the 147gr 9mm Montana heads Combat masters ammo with approx. 132pf.
