I know that a double action gun starts with a round in the chamber decocked. A condition I was told to call "condition one safe".

I was trained in the US, not for IPSC, that a 1911 was in the same condition, if there was a round in the chamber, it was cocked, and the safety was engaged.

Is that correct for IPSC?

I haven't taken the Black Badge yet but am planning to do so this summer and would prefer to use a platform I am comfortable with. And after my GP100 in 357, my 45 ACP 1911 is my favorite gun.

In Standard, Classic and Open divisions you can start holstered 1911 platform gun cocked and safety engaged.

But if I were you, I'd get .40 call 1911... or even 9mm for Classic division. It is much cheaper to shoot than .45, so you can shoot more.

The start conditions in IPSC are not defined by the kind of gun you are using, but rather by the Division you are competing in. There is typically a close correlation between the kind of gun and the Division, but it is not iron clad.

So: you are correct about a 1911 starting condition one (cocked and locked).

However;
- a double action handgun could be shot in Standard Division (in which case starting condition one is fine),
- or you could be shooting it in Production Division (in which case you are starting in condition two (hammer down on a loaded chamber)).

For now: don't sweat the details. All will become clear during your Black Badge course. Use whichever gun you prefer for the course... it won't matter.

Typically round in chamber, hammer cocked and safety on except in production division. Sometimes there is an unloaded start written into the stage briefing.

Thanks guys. I am better with the 45 than any other automatic I own. I am looking at a 9mm glock or beretta. I think that next to the CZ the glock is the most preferred and used. Or am I wrong?

CZ Shadow is popular in production division for sure. Glock is a distant second at least in my neck of the woods. A few Smith & Wesson M&P's, SIG's, Beretta's and the occasional Ruger to round out the field.
