IPSC and Freestyle.......what does it mean to you?

It means stages with multiple solutions not just ones based on maxing out the round count. Target set ups where the distance and spacing between the targets varies and they appear from multiple locations. Not just 4 targets stapled together on one stand and shot from one port.

It doesn't necessarily mean more than one solution, but that I have the option of trying anything I like.

Edited to add,

No freaking boxes. I hate boxes. Give me one area to run around in, not a bunch of stupid little squares to run to and from.

a mix of near and far targets, multiple ways to shoot it based on different skill strengths, and drawing from the holster with a loaded gun. Guns are meant to be loaded, and drawn from our holster,...for the most part in a defensive manner. I don't prefer to run to my mags,...then run to my gun. I never store my gun with out mags next to it...(of course locked in a safe or room constructed as such).
Targets all up close and bunched together proves very little about markmanship,..you need speed & ACCURACY!

Telling everyone to start from "1" position is something I am going to try and stay away from....
I was at an AMA match a few weeks ago....I liked the set up,..multiple ways to shoot the stages, and no set positions to start from.....VERY much freestyle. The more you dictate how a competitor starts....the MORE headache you ask for...

The problem is we still endup with boxes, we put them on walls and call them ports but effectively they are the same thing. I can either put 3 boxes on the ground and tell you to shoot certain targets from each box or I can build a wall with three ports so that you can only see certain targets from each port. Either way it's the same thing but one takes a lot more construction to set up.

amen!!

Freestyle is when the stage briefing can be summarized as, "This is your start position (hand position, gun loaded/unloaded, whatever). When the buzzer goes, start shooting. When you're done, stop". Throw in a couple blurbs about how moving targets are activated, but they can be pretty vague.

Difference being I can choose how close to get to a port, or find a sweet spot to shoot a couple.
Boxes blow and are not a part of my freestyle world. Hungry beagle has it right.

Problem is they you get yahoos that think that means they can runs round behind walls and barricades and put their muzzles through target cuz you didn't tell them they couldn't.

All of the above with extra emphasis on over-reliance on unloaded starts. The whole concept of that doesn't make any sense to me. Is it a shooting contest or a screwing around with your sh*t contest?

I also prefer to avoid stages that force competitors into goofy or impossible positions just to increase difficulty. I don't mid some athleticism, or even a lot of it, but forcing shooting positions that maybe 10% of people can ever hope to accommodate randomizes the match results in favor of the very young and flexible, rather than those who can really shoot.

Hmmm, I was just about to go off on a rant about steel calibration but I realized I can't really hook that into the "free-style" commentary. But I sure want to.

Mine too, and steel calibration will never really be right unless we can go back to backward falling poppers. The forward falling ones are nearly impossible to get right and they'll never stay right unless you can mount them on a perfectly level concrete pad with a rubber shock absorption layer....lol

I dunno, I've seen just as many fails with backward fallers as forward. Poppers are inherently failure prone due to the beating they take. I say why not just get rid of calibration entirely. If the popper has a hit on it anywhere on the scoring surface and it doesn't fall, automatic reshoot. Range equipment failure. We have chronographs now so why do we need to use this antiquated method of testing test power factor?
How many times have we seen good runs trashed at major matches over this issue. Again, I see it as a match randomizer.

Oh yeah, the backward falling ones aren't reliable either, but you could calibrate them. They just wouldn't stay calibrated. The various methods for making forward falling work are all terribly flawed and you just can't properly calibrate them in the first place. The problem then is if one fails to fall with a good hit, most times a.22 could make it fall on the calibration shot.

i must be the only person who likes unloaded/different start poistions, adds some variety and is another thing I get to practice

Yup, pretty much just you lol
It's a sad thing that unloaded starts are considered variety these days....it used to be in creative stage designs. Now we pretty much see 4 targets at the same distance in every port and having an unloaded gun is considered "variety"

Pats post explains why I prefer European matches most of the time. If I'm going to spend a bunch of coin and 12hrs of flying time to shoot a match, I want a great match, not just an ok match. I've yet to see a bad Level II or III match in Europe, and everyone I've been too has been better than almost every match I've seen here, almost.
