I am slowly getting into IPSC and wonder which bullet weight/powder combination will make 'major' in IPSC.

Some sources say, go with 185gr and use more powder, some say stick with 200gr.

Please advice

I got 200gr today and TiteGroup powder with Fed Large primer. Try to load some, but still has to wait for ATT :-(

a 200 grain is moving pretty fast to make major , almost 900 fps .
a 230 grain only has to go about 780 fps .
remember to build in a safety cushion , if they check your ammo none can be under 175 pf . build to about 185 pf .
a factory 230 is usually around 810 fps = 185 pf
a 200 would have to go 925 fps to get 185 pf
In my gun the slower 230 kicks less and puts me back on target quicker .
The 230 is a round nose and usually will feed better than a 200 .
You also use less powder in the 230 . But the bullets are a little more .
just my 2 cents

Actually for Standard Division the minimum PF for major is 170 (from IPSC Jan. 2006 Edition). So only NEED 850 fps with a 200 gr. Or 740 fps with a 230 gr. But I would aim for about a 175 PF. Don't forget if you are travelling much for a match that changes in elevations and temperatures could affect your loads so you might want to factor that in too when you chrono your loads.

They actually take an average at Chrono...you can have an individual round that calculates under the PF Floor (170 for Standard) as long as the average of the best 3 is 170 or above...

They have 8 rounds to work with (1st one is pulled and put on the scale and that weight is used to calculate the PF)

They fire 3 rounds and take an average.

If you don't make it, they fire 3 more and take the best 3 of the 6. If you still don't make you have a choice to have the last round weighed or fired through the chrono...

when you are shooting a standard gun you want to go with a heavy bullet and the lowest powder charge that will make major plus 10%. in 45 this seems to alternate between 200 and 230 grain bullets. my favorite load for the 45 is a 200 grain Montana Gold JSP over 5.4 grains of Winchester super target, WST.

So, going with Titegroup with charge between 5.5-6.0 should be sufficient for required power?

It depends on the gun but that's a heavy charge for anything 200gr and up

I'd start at 5.0 for the 200's and about 4.5 for the 230's and work your way up...slowly ;)
