IPSC Holster Question

I'm looking at taking the IPSC course sometime this summer. I guess I need to pickup a holster. What features should I look for in a holster for IPSC? Are there any types that I should avoid, that are illegal etc?

I'll probably be using my Norinco NZ85b.

For the black badge course you will need a holster that covers the trigger. I would suggest you hold off on buying an expensive and discipline-specific holster until you have had a chance to look around and try out a few makes and models.
 
Would something like this be ok? I like that I'd be able to use it with both my NZ85 and my NP29. Would the triple mag pouch be enough do you think?

For the mag pouches, I could just tuck the straps inside the pouch just behind the mag. I wouldn't think they'd fall out, in the picture they look to be 80% or more inside the pouch. Should be enough I'd think.

I do like the price of those ones though, the course and ammo are already going to cost a small fortune.

No...by IPSC rules...if the holster or pouch has a strap...you have to use it.

If someone showed up at a match with a Holster with all the straps cut off...I'd disallow it until it was proven to still be safe.

Those rigs were not designed to be used with the straps cut off...and I've seen some pretty wonky results.

Bladetech makes some very reasonably priced equipment. The DOH (dropped offset holster) is a very good rig to start with. It's secure and still allows for a good fast and repeatable draw. Their mag pouches are also good. Many of the site sponsers sell these types of rigs.

The wrong tools for the job will only serve to cause to undue stress and frustration...you can get a decent rig without breaking the bank

If you think the ammo for doing your BB is going to cost you a small fortune them maybe IPSC not for you
 
I have a fobus mag pouch paddle thingy, holds 2 single stack 9mm mags. (Fobus 6909) I used it for my black badge course but have no use for it anymore. If you would like to have it, let me know.

No.. if the holster has a strap attached then it must be used to start the stage..


5.2.5.3 Unless specified in the written stage briefing, or unless required by a Range Officer, the position
of holsters and allied equipment must not be moved or changed by a competitor during a match. If
a retaining strap is attached to a holster, it must be applied or closed prior to issuance of the
"Standby" command (see Rule 8.3.3).

As Quigly has stated.. if the straps where cut off, then the pistol holster has no way to secure the firearm in the holster, and now becomes unsafe (eg if you started in a sitting position, holstered, and loaded, the gun could fall out just by putting your leg 90 degrees)..

The RO. should never let it get to that position (to be able to fall out).. they wouldn't let you start the match/stage with a holster with the straps cut off.. (at least I wouldn't)

Way to go Ghost. good for you to offer a helping hand to a new member. if you make nationals introduce yourself and i will buy you a beer or three.
