So in starting to think about action shooting I took a look at the IPSC Ontario web site. The Black Badge section states that button activated holsters such as Serpa and similar are not permitted. Does anyone know exactly what the definition of "button activated and similar" is? Does that mean any holster with mechanical retention that needs to be released to draw?

As luck would have it both my holsters are "button activated" I think, one is actually a Serpa.

Thanks in advance!

I do recall that any retention device on your holster must be functional (for example, if you have a strap with a snap or clip, no cutting it off, or tying it out of the way.

I don't recall seeing anything about not using retention holsters... of course, police or military can compete with duty gear... Perhaps go straight to the Rules book. IPSC is stacked waist-high with lawyers and armchair lawyers - anything someone had a question or grip about, eventually wound up in the rulebook.

The serpa holsters cannot be used....
The problem is new shooters could drag their fingers too long and accidentally hit the trigger

Yup they were pretty clear about that, I'm mostly wondering what constitutes "and similar". For example, I have a Fobus like this one:

I assume that's button activated. It sounds like I need to buy a holster that is friction retention only?

Edit: Hope I didn't come off as rude there :) I meant it was clear that Serpas are not allowed, I appreciate your clarification as to why.

You don't need to be doing anything else with your trigger finger during the draw, other than keeping it clear of the trigger guard until the gun is on target. There are non serpa holsters available from Blackhawk and many other manufacturers that will work quite well for the course and the competitions to follow.

I believe the holster is only prohibited for the course itself not competition. The retention systems for the most part are easily removable.

As stated, retention is not a benefit for competition shooting. (Beyond the obvious).

Thanks, that's the kind of information I'm looking for, I'm just thinking in the context of the BB course not matches. I realize a retention holster is not ideal but it's all I have right now. I guess I'm back to shopping....I don't even know if there is a non-retention holster for a Jericho available....might be time for a shadow 2 :)

FYI it's not just an IPSC BB policy, there is a long list of professional instructors who won't allow Serpa type holsters on their courses. Google it and see.
