Just finished my Black Badge this weekend, and was wondering about practice. Do people use a 22 pistol for practicing cheaply, or should you practice with what you plan to shoot? I have a 22 conversion slide for my Glock, but I think I'd really like to shoot my HK45 since I shoot it a lot more accurately, even with the super long and heavy DA shot.

Are there any good training DVD's, or really good dry fire drills I can do at home?

Heh there...I am sorry I missed the black badge shoot on sunday...I wimped out and went .22 shooting instead. Did you use the .45 for the BB course?

I sometimes use the .22 kit on my 9mm tanfoglio at the first of a practice, just to work on draw, and first hits on steel. It is a lot cheaper than 9mm or .45. Maybe 90rds of .22....then I move on to 9mm or .40...etc.
I think I have a lighter hammer spring for your HK. Next time i meet up with you, you can have it. It might lower your trigger in DA a bit. I like the HK's, but...I would suggest you get a 9mm HK instead...way cheaper for ammo. Even reloading it would be cheaper. You can still shoot the .45 in standard division, but you can also shoot the 9mm in standard division OR production division. You may be able to find a used HK P30-L-S in 9mm in the exchange forum. Google "Todd Jarrett grip techniques",...or Matt Burkett dryfire drills. There are various DVD's available as well. Glad you took the plunge. I saw your picks on the IPSC NB website, and recognized you. See you on the range.;)

I used the PX4 for the course, don't have enough mags for the HK45 unfortunately. I would have used it though, for some reason I just shoot it really well. I surprised myself when I took it to the range the first time.

I'm not too concerned with the price of 45, but any savings is obviously cool. Just curious if shooting a 22 pistol while doing drills helps you focus on the fundamentals, etc. I shot pretty decently for a newbie the first couple stages, but I think I was just tired or worn out later on, I really started to suck. Maybe the -30 weather was getting to me when I was running out to patch, haha.

Also, don't suppose they have any of those fancy race holsters for an HK45 do they? I imagine the ones styled like the Ghost holsters would screw with the mag release. Running the Blackhawk Serpa for the HK and the PX4 right now. Didn't notice it slow me down, didn't catch up or have any issues with it releasing, but those race holsters look really interesting, would like to try one.

they have a CR speed that will likely work with the HK...I have a SPeedsec race holster cut to fit an HK P30-L...very close to the same trigger guard....you can have it.

Wow, that would kick ass dude. I'll try it out before you just give it to me though, I might end up not liking a race holster. I wouldn't be opposed to tossing some cash your way for the spring/holster.

If you cannot shoot a decent group, then practice with the 22 until you can, then switch to your 9mm.

You can practice everything you need to do well in IPSC by dry firing the correct techniques until it is automatic ( or subconscious) there are several books available to help with this available fron Doubletap sports and others.

But one thing you need to do at the range is recoil control, you cannot practice this with a 22. The correct grip, grip tension, both eyes open while you shoot ( you cannot blink and hit anything), and not to flinch needs full power ammo to train with.

You can always take a further course with some of the top shooters in your area as well.

That's pretty awesome, thanks Matt. I have the Glock dry fire kit so that should work out. Just need to snag a holster for it.
