howdy,

since i know absolutley nothing about the shooting sports whatsoever...generally... what types of pistols do you see used in ipsc shoots...eg, caliber , mag type(single stack, or double stack), 1911 style, sight types/styles...etc...

Open..........1911 wide body 2011 types in .38 super and 9mm major

Stadard. Para, Tanfo LC and STI in .40

Production: CZ and clones (tanfo Stock) and Glock in 9mm as well as M&P in 9mm

Fiber sights on all but the Open guns which have optics

For production division 9mm is perfered as it is closer to the 125 power factor.

Factory .40 does not provide any advantage and is more expensive.

If you reload you can make a nice .40 round that is pretty low in reocil and almost as cheap as a 9mm

so is it fair to say more prefer the 9mm over the .40 due to recoil or accuracy?

Caliber choice is largely determined by the division people shoot in. Production scoring favours 9mm, Standard scoring favours .40 and Open favours 9mm/38 super.

In the beginning you should just shoot whatever you've got. I shot a .45 HK USP for my first 2 years. Not the best choice some would say, but I managed to take a few trophies and have a lot of fun all the same.

Go out to the range and try out all the pistols and buy one that fits your hands and go practice. Talk to all the shooters and ask for advice, they've been through the same steps and most are of great knowledge. I always suggest buying the best you can afford. It's cheaper in the long run as you'll upgrade soon.

Holster: Bladetech, CR Speed, Ghost, or GR.

Mag Pouches: (about 5): CR Speed, Ghost, or GR.

Belt: CR Speed

Range Bag: You need smth big and sturdy. Shooter's Gear or Green Mountain.

PS: Look around ..... most shooters use the same gear. It's for a reason.

Pistols

Production: Stick to 9mm as it's cheaper. The recent trend seems to be the CZ design with the full dustcover ie.. CZ SP-01, Baby Eagle, and Tangfoglio Stock II are the best bets. I used a G17 before but am goign to try the SP-01 this year.

Standard
40SW is the calibre of choice. You can use 9mm but shoot minor. Most ppl use the 2011 design but the Tangfoglio Custom Sport is coming on strong. I'd suggest STI or SVI for the 2011 design. SVI you are looking at the big bucks <$3k. You can use a Single Stack if you already own one, i'd skip single stack design if you are buying a new pistol.

Open
.38/9mm is the calibre of choice. The pistols are very very similar to Standard but with scopes and comps. STI/SVI/Tangfoglio rule.

Revolver
Just have fun!

if you get into ipsc, new rule change for 1911 hand gun, only 8 round mag allowed now, no more ten round mag, if its single stack

It's good you already have a pistol. If you are just looking to have fun and see if you like the sport you can buy a fobus holster and mag pouches . Under $100.

In the long run you'll most likely end up with this rig....

Holster:
(Bladetech - $85) / (CR Speed - $210) / (Ghost $185)

Mag Pouches: (about 5): CR Speed or Ghost $40 each - $200

Belt: CR Speed - $62

According to his other thread Nearnorthguy already has a M&P in .40

That should serve well enough.

I haven't seen anyone mention about the requirement for DA for the first trigger pull in Production. This means that you can't shoot a SA like a 1911 in Production. It's automatically Standard.

Also WHY Production favours 9mm is because there's no Major/Minor split for scoring in Production. All hits are scored as Major but you still need to ensure that the ammo you're shooting meets the Minor power factor.

This is all in the rule book but hopefully you others don't mind me bringing it up more specifically since it wasn't specifically pointed out above.
