IPSC Revolver Division Questions

Hello All,

Looking at getting into IPSC Revolver for something different to try it out. Any suggestions regarding minor vs major pistols? I always wanted a S&W 625 but they are really hard to find these days and really dont want to load 45 cal rnds to be honest.

Any suggestions on a .40 cal revolver if there is such a thing or maybe a 9mm revolver. I know Alfa Proj makes a good 9mm for the price.

Also could someone who shoots this division clarify the ruling on 6 rnd cylinders compared to 8 rnd cylinders and is there any benefit to buying a 8 rnd cylinder wheel gun.

Thanks in adavance and Happy Holidays!!

I don't know about the rules of revolver in IPSC as I don't shoot IPSC.
However, due to the speed and round count of the game, I would recommend a higher end revolver than a Alfa Proj.
A Ruger GP or S&W L frame would be a better choice IMO.
As for .40S&W, I can't think of a specific revolver chambered for .40 but a 10mm revolver like a 610 will chamber .40S&W.

I belive that they are changing the rules for the coming year allowing 8 round capacity for minor power factor loads. The 9mm Smith and Wesson 929 is going to shine
If you are major PF, you can only hold 6 rounds.

They are trying to create some more appeal for revolver shooters and now minor PF would be an advantage

The following is the marked up changes that will be effective Jan 1, 2017 for IPSC

Revolver 2017 Changes.JPG

I have shot my 625 in a couple of matches, and my 929 in a couple of fun matches where I could shoot all 8 rounds. If you are an accurate shooter, there is no comparison, 8 shot minor will be a big advantage with minimizing moon clip changes during a staqe.

You could also go with an 627 or other 38/357 eight shot revolver, but moon clip changes are a little trickier with the longer 38sp cartridge. You could go the 38 short/long colt route instead, but that's another setup cost. I reload 9mm already for my Production div guns, so it was a simple choice :)

625 will be much less fun to shoot after 8 rounds allowed in IPSC starting this January - 929 in 9mm or 627 if you want 38 special or 38 short colt.

USPSA Revolver has basically seen the majority of their shooters switch to shooting 9mm minor once their rule changes were implemented a few years back. Minor with 8 rounds is for the most part far more advantageous than major with 6.

I shoot ipsc revolver. The rule will change Jan 1st to allow 8 rounds. The 929 is pretty much the only competitive revolver available. 6 shot is a disadvantage as course design for ipsc is 4 paper targets max from any position. That requires 8 rounds with 6 you have to waste time doing standing reloads. Also a decent reload with a revolver is 2 to 3 seconds. This might seem insignificant but if you have to effect two extra reloads during a course of fire that adds 6 seconds to the time. That is a big disadvantage.

4 paper targets max from any position is taken way too literal by the most of match designers in Canada. It's not that hard to make stages 6-round neutral, so 2 second reloads would be when changing positions and won't have the same impact on the overall time. But because most stage designs do suck for 6-rounds the 8-rounders do come quite handy.

I just picked up a Ruger Redhawk in .45 with plans to use it in IPSC and IDPA. IDPA limits to 6rnds and for moonclips you need .40 minimum I beleive.
If you're just doing IPSC, the 929 in 9mm is the way to go. Great gun with just a little work to it.

Was wondering about that new 45acp Redhawk, are the moon clips similar in dimension to the S&W 625 moon clips?

.357Mag is the minimum. Includes 40S&W, 10MM, 44 Spl, 44Mag, 45acp, 45GAP, 45Auto Rim, 45Colt You can use moon clips or speedloaders. Six rounds max. in gun. 7 & 8 rounders must be down loaded to 6 rounds.

I read that 38sp is ok in Stock Revolver, and 357mag is the minimum in Enhanced revolver. Max barrel length is 4.25" for revolvers as well.

Loading 6 round into a 7 or 8 round cylinder is not going to be fun at all :(

You are correct. Nobody is going to be down loading 7 & 8 round revolvers for certain, life is to short. OK to do so but I just don't see it happening unless a cross over shooter comes out to play IDPA from IPSC. Hard enough to find revolver shooters in IDPA. Most I see at the WA State match are guys shooting SR using 38spl. Some do shoot their 625's but they are few and far between from what I have seen.

I did Classify SS in Enhanced with .357mag using speedloaders. It was painful after 90 rounds.

In hind sight, I should have kept the far right 625 that had been shortened to 4.25", but I sold it to buy another 929 as a backup. I'm planning on playing in Revolver div in IPSC now that there is 8 shot minor :)

I just have to ask, is the shortened 625 Ken Soucie's old revolver? I would have loved to have bought it and missed the gun once on the EE.

Who stocks S&W revolvers? I would like to handle a 929. I started IPSC with a revolver several moons ago.

Yes it is. Ken Soucie apparently bobbed the hammer, full trigger job, and cut the barrel down to 4.25". It had the sweetest DA trigger pull! I've learned to get my DA trigger pulls close (new springs and polish the $#@! out of the rebound bar), but everyone that has tried that 625 thinks it's the best trigger job they have tried. I would have kept it, but just picked up that 610, and wanted a backup 929 .... :(

Forgot to add, I got my first 100% with that revolver at a qualifier in Kamloops.
(mea culpa - I finished first and last in my division lol)

VanMan I have a 85Combat Ken did for me. I have never shot another CZ with as smooth a trigger as the one he did for me.

Ken's 625 revolver finished his quest for 5 Gun Master in IDPA, the first and only Canadian to date to accomplish that feat to date.
