Anyone shooting a Smith & Wesson Pro Series 986 in IPSC? Picked up a nice one owner, comes with 4 moon clips...and that is about it. All the rest of the gear has to be decided on, and sourced, before I can actually take it to a competition...
Rather than decide by the 'trial and error' method, ( $$$ ), I was hoping to take advantage of a fellow GNT'r that perhaps has been down that road before me...
I would obviously plan on shooting the Revolver Division so I guess a 'race holster' would work, but Standard Div might be fun also, and not sure the race holster is acceptable there, have to look it up.
Are some moon clips better than others, ( for 9mm...), I plan on buying a BMT Mooner, clip loader so that would be easier I assume...

Cheers,
Jim

Any holster that covers the trigger guard is fine in any divison. However the 986 has 7 rounds if you fire 7 rounds without reloading you will get a procedural penalty if you are shooting in Revolver divison. I have seen people shoot a 929 in production division however your moonclips have to be held behind the hip bone. Not an ideal setup.

So rather than decide by trial and error you should consider either purchasing a revolver that is appropriate to the rules of sport or chose a sport that is appropriate to your choice of revolver. So ipsc is not ideal for a 986. A 986 would be fine for ICORE.

OK...not ideal, I agree. But did I misunderstand the Revolver Division Rules:
"Special conditions:No limit on cylinder capacity. A maximum of 6 rounds to be fired before reloading. Violations will incur one procedural penalty for each shot in excess of 6 rounds actually fired before reloading", and that if at the 'load and make ready' command, you load 6 rounds, being careful to index your cylinder correctly of course...fire the 6 rds and then all subsequent loads can take advantage of the 'no limit on cylinder capacity' comment, and load all 7? Is that not what the restriction means? The 'fired BEFORE reloading' part?

And as much as I would love to try ICORE, unfortunately for me, and I'm sure others like me, there is no representation of that I'm aware of, of that version of the action sports anywhere near me here in VERY EASTERN Ontario. Maybe in the future...?

I do have a lovely 686 but didn't want to start production reloading in another caliber...since I shoot 6-7 hundred rounds of 9mm a month already the 9mm 986 seemed like a logical choice. Guessed wrong again? Geezzzz.

Speaking from experience . . . . . . go for it Jim
I've had 2 fun-filled seasons with my 986 in IPSC and club matches. I have the magnetic insert for my Race Master holster from Murray Gardner, moon clip holders from Revolver Supply Co., moon clips, loading tool, stripper and checker from TK Custom, Hogue extended cylinder release (short) and 11lb rebound spring from Brownells then a F/O front sight from Wolverine. Yes, no overnight one-stop shopping for all the goodies!
I use Federal Small Pistol primers and adjusted the main spring as light as possible; should I get a rare light primer strike then I have a spare round available, otherwise think in 6's not 10's and practise the reloading a lot as that is where seconds can be lost. In non-IPSC sanctioned club matches, I stick to using only 6 rounds even if shooting in Standard, it's a good habit to get into.
IPSC rules may change in the future regarding cylinder capacity . . . . . so what, if you have the 986, go shoot and enjoy.

Vince Pinto will be proposing an amendment to allow >6 shot minor in Revolver division at the 2016 general assembly. If that is approved, the 929 will be the way to go so I would (and have) put my money into setting one of those up for IPSC.

Getting setup for IPSC revolver shooting is not cheap. A holster, moon clips (min 50), moon clip loader/unloader, moon clip checker, ... would set you back ~$400. Then if you want to start tinkering with your revolver, you can spend a lot more on spring kits, trigger jobs, grips, cylinder releases, cylinder chamfering ...... Be careful - it's very addictive (and fun) :)

Here's some of my toys in stock form.

WOW...I'm wiping my drool from my face...

The motion was passed at this last general assembly to allow 6+ shot minor in revolver in addition to 6 shot major. This does allow people to make custom 9 shot, maybe 10 shot 9mm revolvers, but most folks will shoot the 929 or 627 now. The 986 would be great for steel shoots and PPC though.

Effective 1 Jan 2017 as I understand
