So, I have always been a Rem 870 guy, own 2 right now, but have probably owned 6 or 7 different ones over the past 20 years. I am thinking of switching to a Mossberg 590. I heard some great comments on the Mossy last weekend at the Shotgun portion of EESA's 3 gun Match.

What I really want is some input from people that have used both 870 and the Mossberg platform, and give me your thoughts.

Things I like about the Mossy 590:

Tang Safety
Shell lifter is out of the way for loading, not fighting a spring loaded gate seems like a bonus
9 shot capacity out of the box
Ghost ring sights, out of the box

Dislikes:

Not sure, I should of asked to shoot someones last weekend, DOH

Things I like about the 870:

Reliability
Parts are abundant
Easy to take apart, strip and clean

Dislikes:

Safety could be situated better
Loading gate, always fighting against that spring tension to load another shell, this is a biggy for me.

Any and all comments are welcome, really like some input, whether there is something I am missing, reliability wise, or parts wise for going to a Mossberg.

Thanks

I have a 590, no problems with anything so far. It's a little more complex to take apart than a 870, but not much. The 590A1 have all metal parts and a thicker barrel.

Good luck on getting a 590A1 I have had mine on order for months!! I was planning on doing the same thing with it, Ive used an 870 up till now for 3 gun and thought I would try the Mossberg- ive got a trijicon Reflex site for it as well.

Dealer I talked to today, said end of August is when they are expecting the distributors to see the 590a1's:( , this makes me want one even more now:mad:

If you have a pistol grip on the 590, you must change positions to disengage the safety.
With a pistol grip on the 870, the safety is under your finger.

Actually, that is one of the things I have been thinking about. There is no way to get your thumb to the mossy safety, with a, say, Spec Ops stock installed.

So that brings up another question, how do people find the Speed Feed stocks?
I have never used one. Do the shells come out easily?

Seeing as I was there with you on the weekend, and I had a 590 (not the A1 version), you should have asked. I think the main difference between the 590 and the 590A1 is just a heavier barrel.

I would have gladly let you try it. I am a newbie to shotgunning in IPSC, and did some reading before buying. Almost bought the 870 Tactical a few months back, but decided to wait. The internet lead me to some comments from people with experience on the subject, so I followed their lead. Then I found a slightly used 590 on the EE Forum here, and bought it. This place is great!!

The 870 Tactical with Ghost Ring sights is a nice firearm. Most people find it will take 6+1 shots (as did one fellow on our squad last weekend....even though they advertise 7+1). The Mossberg 590 has the Ghost Rings on it, and it holds 8+1 easily, as well as a 20" barrel instead of the 18.5 inch of the Remington. Advantage: Mossy.:D The Mossberg also has double extractors I believe, where the 870 has a single extractor.

The loading gate on the 870 is a pain in the butt. No gate on the Mossberg. The 870 safety is on the trigger guard. Easier than the Mossberg, but I just held the gun with my right thumb on the safety at the start. Not a problem.

Quigley came around at the end of the match and commented that he likes the Mossberg much better than the 870, and he seems to be kicking some butt in the match. That has to tell you something.;)

The loaded 870 Tactical has one real advantage over the Mossberg 590. It has a removeable choke that looks SOOOOO Coooool!! It has a breaching choke with spikes on the end. Doesn't help with your score unless they include "style points" though.

Hope my comments have helped.

If I was going to build an open shotgun....I'd use a long barrelled (28 inch) long tubed 870 with a muzzle break. You can find alot more do dads for the 870 (like the loading ramps for those speed loaders)

For Standard manual...a 590...or 590 A1.

The difference in weight is between the two is quite noticable...If you put a knoxx stock on it...the 590 would probably be a better choice (lighter to manouver) Otherwise the A1 does help soak up a bit more recoil. And as has already been mentioned...reloading is way easier than the 870

Either way...nice to see a wider spread interest in 3 gun :) and nice to see a few more Mossy's on the range

.

Yes but the match was won by an 22 year old 870 Express with Iron sight cylinder choked barrel and 7+1 tube.

Yeah, but he had an "in" for the match!! LOL.

Truthfully, the match would not be won by the difference of an 870 or a 590. It would be the nut behind the trigger, so to speak.

I think that the original question was to try to get opinions about the difference between the two guns. I believe that has been now covered for him.

Oh yes.....one must take advantage of the "in".

I mean who would not want to shoot 3 stages on the Friday night after setting up for 11 hours straight.

Then shoot the other 5 stages in a row on the Saturday after R/Oing for 6 hours!!:kickInTheNuts:

LOL...........
