How many shots can you take at a target during a IPSC match? Is it the same for classic targets and poppers?
If the match is 12 classic and 3 poppers and 27 rounds is that 2 rounds for the classics and 1 round each for the poppers?
Any help would be beneficial I'm a little confused with this.
Thanks

you can shoot as many rounds as you like/need. The 27 is the minimum . But more shots take more time hurting your score. Just make sure you hit each paper twice and knock down the poppers

Thanks robchar. I'm a little new at this.
So if a stage consists of 3 classic targets and 2 poppers and it takes me 30 rounds to hit the classics twice and knock down the poppers that fine with IPSC rules?
I'm just using this scenario as an example.

If I can step in you must throw the minimum rounds at a target (two in your example) to avoid failure to engage penalties. If you don't hit the target you lose the score for that round and take a "miss" or double maximum score ( ten points)

If a popper or plate doesn't fall it is a miss, but you must engage each target. All any extra rounds do is increase your time on that stage.

At least that WAS the rules...I am out of date

Standard scoring is the best two hits per paper target, with steel falling to score. The number of rounds indicated will be the minimum. For your examples of 12 targets and three steel they indicate a minimum of 27 rounds, the lowest possible round count to fully complete the course of fire. This would break down to two rounds per paper target (classics) at 12 x 2 = 24 and 1 round at each steel 1 x 3 =3 with 24 + 3 = 27.

You can shoot as many rounds as you need to get your hits on paper and to hit the steel, with the only penalty being the extra time it takes to shoot those rounds.

As mentioned there can also be penalties for "failure to engage" when you do not shoot at a target at all.

One main reason the course is broken down in such a fashion is so that competitors are able to determine that they have found and accounted for all of the targets doing the walk through and are able to plan the stage accordingly.

Wasn't this explained in your Black Badge course?

spray and pray.....you can shoot as many rounds as you want but as stated above you must shoot at least the min. knocking the poppers down and hitting the paper....if you hit the paper target 40 times good on you but only your best two count. the only penalty for lots of rounds down range is time...

+1 Guppy! It's not the number of rounds that kills your score - it's the time you took firing off those rounds. Accuracy means getting the job done with the minimum number of rounds you can, speed comes from accuracy. I've taken twice as long hosing a #@$$@# piece of steel, as I would have if I took 2 whole seconds to line up the sights and get the shot right the first time.

Swingers and drop-turners are different creatures... Allocate a second or two to putting as many holes in it as you can, then move on :)

If you can trigger a non-disappearing swinger early, then put shots on it later when it's settled down, that's best. Drop-turners and other disappearing targets... brrrrap, and carry on.

pay attention to the WSB (Written Stage Briefing) as sometimes the shots required on targets can be less or more than 2. It is common to see partial targets requiring different hits than full for example. But, not always. Every WSB will have the number of targets, the total number of rounds required and total points available. Some will also tell you how many no shoots there are, but some just say "and some no shoots".
