Iqaluit Arctic Char Fishing

The Sylvia Grinnel River, walking distance from town, was, at one time, a first class char river. There are still some fish in it. Don't expect too much.
The river is a fine example of gross mismanagement of a valuable resource.
Apart from the Grinnel, any fishing will require travelling away from town.

Listen to tiriaq as he used to live there for a million yrs and knows his shizznat! I'd say plan to travel further outland then the Sylvia Grinnell river or fly into Pangnirtung and go fishing in an area that is beyond breath-taking.

Ditto about the Sylvia Grinnel. Are your current plans to stay in iqaluit for your entire holiday? If you've got the money to get out to some other communities I would recommend doing so, both for the fishing and for the experience. If staying in Iqaluit, consider chartering a boat across the bay to Bay of Two Rivers. If the tides are right ("right"=big/high) it can be really good over there at high tide (although my intel dates back to August 2003). My favourite lure up there was the cheapo lucky strike "half wave" in gold colour...the small size, about 1.5" long. Can be lots of caribou over there too.

May not be many caribou. Latest report I've seen is that the population of the South Baffin herd has collapsed. This was reported at nunatsiaqonline.ca

The fishing in Iqaluit is better than it used to be. Pangnirtung is much better though by far, and the view is breath taking.

Pang was good enough for Pierre Trudeau and his entourage.

Are you trying to turn me off going to Pang? :)

Grr Trudeau..

I looked up Pang pics and yes it does look amazing... will have to see how much time n spare money we have first.

Will be staying at my wifes neices place...so not sure how much she needs to see her..

Any idea what a flight to Pang for a days fishing would cost? I tried to look up Iqaluit outfitters with not a lot of luck.

Contact Ken Borek Air about a trip to pang to fish. When I was there ten years ago they did day trips out of iqaluit and had contacts in pang for people who wanted to fish. I went char fishing when I was there with a guide called Charlie Komoartuk- he was excellent.

Buddy caught a nice char at the river the other day. You will still have fun, may have been better in the past but still good these days.

Caught lots of char at the river last year too.

Good to hear....
May be a bit cramped at my wifes neices place..but no big deal. I can suffer thru that to fish for char n see amazing northern lights.

You need me to bring anything up there for u Spartans?(sounds like you may live there) I hear everythings expensive there.

I lived in the NWT for 10 years in the 80's & early 90's, I never caught char but I ate a lot of it,its one of my favorite fish. I've also been to Iqaluit and all up the east coast of Baffin Island... flew First Air all the way to Pond Inlet and stops along the way, I loved it up there. You're going to have a blast

Oh and if you cook char in parchment paper and a little lemon and some Julienne vegetables it is like a bit of heaven... Arctic Char Enpaupiet I think its called mmmmm
