IR illuminator on the PEQ-15. How bright is it?

First and foremost: I have no experience using my PEQ-15 with NV, bought it on the premises I may not get another chance at one and with plans to some day buy some decent Gen 3 NV. With that in mind I have been keeping an eye out for IR illuminator capable weapon lights from Surefire.

So here is my question: should I have an IR capable flashlight to aid the PEQ-15, or will the built in illuminator in the PEQ-15 do the same thing? The reason I ask is because I love my Surefire 600u 500lmn lights for white light work, and would rather not have extra white (150lmn) and IR lights if my PEQ would suffice.

I look forward to advice from your experiences.

I'm rocking a PEQ-4 (meh) and a m600v. I can't say I am happy with the 120mW IR light of the SF light. It'll take me a month before I can get access to a PEQ-15 to compare. Give me a shout if I forget about you. You peaked my interest so I want to compare when I have a chance.

Having run both the PEQ-15 and the DBAL-A3 under dual-tube Gen-3 NVGs, the IR illuminator are functional and work well in close environments. But they both lack the throw of a high end dedicated IR illuminator (I run a Surefire M600V). Are they better than nothing, absolutely, can they compare to a dedicated illuminator? Not in my opinion.

Also, one issue I have run into with them is that they are fairly low to bore and depending on how you run your set up (i run my DBAL behind my grip, as close to my optics as possible) you may run into issues with the IR illuminator beam hitting your thumb.

B.E. Meyer MAWL-DA addresses all the issues that end users have identified with the PEQ-15 & DBAL units,MAWL-DA eliminates granular illuminator adjustment and complex multi-position switches and instead consolidates these choices into the settings you need: Close Range, Mid Range, and Long Range, with the power and divergences appropriate for each. Bad news it's not available for sale ... Class IIIb Laser

The MAWL has my attention, I'm not exactly sure how I would convince work to get some. I'd love to try one and push it up for eval.

Da Torch.

Brightest/strongest IR illumination light on the market. Although your PEQ15 is a laser is it not, therefore an illuminator/flashlight would just augment the laser. It's like any illumination, the more the better. The laser is for the aim point, the light, to illuminate.

Surefire, Vampire/V series of combination IR/vis lights are very good as well. I've had a few different IR filters over visible lights. They work, but are not as strong as dedicated IR lights.
