I posted a thread some time ago asking if an Iranian mauser bayonet will fit on a kar 98K, and I have got one since, and I can say it does fit. The only problem is that the cleaning rod cannot be in the gun, since it will interfere with the bayonet mounting.

Another note, on a Japanese Arisaka Type 38 Cavalry Carbine, you can mount a Type 30 Bayonet on it, but like you mentioned, the cleaning rod cannot be in the gun.
