I've a SS Win M-70 in .375 H&H that I'd like to equip with iron sights for dangerous game use. Can any CGN'ers with experience in this comment on recommended sight brands/styles, and Canuck gunsmiths you would recommend?

I'd like to go low-profile, so as not to interfere with the scope when it's mounted, with a barrel-band type front fixture, and a low V, Express-style rear sight. It needs to be bomb-proof.

Thanks.

these are NECG (Recknagel) sights on my 375, the fixed rear blade and front banded ramp are as bombproof as you can get, once they are screwed and soldered on.

the rear blade is now filed to a similar profile as below. Once they are filed in, you can stake the blade in place or use some bushing adhesive to hold it.

they are not cheap, around $150 for the works , but they are all steel and very nicely crafted. www.newenglandcustomgun.com

by the way, before anyone asks, the rifle in the bottom pic is not mine, and yes, it is installed backward

Nice setup. That's the idea I had in mind. The price isn't unreasonable either.

I got the iron sight "religion" after breaking a Leupold QRW ring under recoil, leaving me with a very noisy stick in my hands. The piece was a casting, and although Leupold replaced it, I don't have a warm fuzzy about their rings/bases now. I think it's worth the extra scratch for Badger Ordnance, Warne, et.al. parts.

I'm interested in this quote as I just bought a set of Leupold PRW rings for my 375/338 to be used on a set of all-steel weaver type bases.

What was the caliber and scope on it at the time the ring failed?

thnx. :)

Hey SC,

The rings were on my Model 70 Classic in .375 H&H. Both rings & bases were Leupold QRW type. Scope: Leupold LPS 1.5-6x42mm on Low rings. Load: 300 gr Hornady SPBT @ ~2450 fps. Barrel length: 20". The failure point was the rear ring on the adjustable side (i.e. the "foot" of the ring). I wish I'd taken good photos of it at the time, but I no longer have the part.
Given the modest weight of the scope, and the low mounts, there shouldn't have been undue stress on the rings.

Regardless of manufacturer, I think it serves to illustrate why iron sights aren't just for looks on a big game / dangerous game rifle! It sure was an eye opener (no pun intended) for me!

HTH.
