Hi Guys,

I have a Mossberg 500 shotgun with 3 barrels, one of them being a rifled cantilever barrel with a weaver mount.

The problem is that if I mount a red-dot sight on it (the one I have laying around) the sight line becomes too high and I don't get any cheek weld. I don't need a scope anyway as I'm not gonna shoot anything beyond 50 yards.

So far I found only one set of sights made by LPA https://www.lpasights.com/en/products/sht04w/. However, apart from being outrageously expensive, the front sight is too small to fit on my barrel, which is 0.95" in diameter.

Perhaps I don't need a rear sight at all? Perhaps I could use the channel of the Weaver rail itself as a rear sight, and only install a lower sitting front sight like this one https://www.mcssl.com/content/assets/44/448986/WEBSITE_OPS12P_MOOBS.png (provided it could fit).

Any thoughts / ideas?

Cheers,
Jaroslav

1.) You don't really need a rifled barrel for 50 meters.

You could use one of your other smoothbore barrels with a good Foster slug like the Federal Trueball. Foster slugs are definitely accurate enough out of a smoothbore barrel ... and for 50 meters.

2.) Cantilever barrels are designed for optics

Those cantilever barrels are designed to mount an optic. Maybe try to find a red dot that has a low profile ..... something like a Vortex Venom. I am sure there are red dots out there with an even lower profile ...

If the red dot mounts too high then maybe look at getting a cheek riser? Solely Canadian Holsters was working on one, if it's not available yet it should be available very soon.

I would just use one of the other barrels if your only shooting within 50y, the price of Sabot slugs alone would make me not use it. If it’s a 3 barrel combo it likely came with a shorter turkey barrel, it’s what I’d use and do in my 870 3 barrel combo. Foster slugs are cheaper and plenty accurate out past 50y, turkey barrels usually come with irons or a rib you can attach fiber optic irons to.
