looking for suggestions on iron sights. Im thinking of getting sights installed on my Browning BAR shortrac stalker in 308. I will be using the rifle for a dogging/walking rifle while running hounds. I need something for fast target acquisition, currently have a holosun red dot but would still like iron sights.

I ordered irons for my tavor off amazon, they were pretty inexpensive (but am still waiting for them to show 2.5 months later). When I was looking for them I noticed there were a few site sponsors that carry them.

Talk to a good gunsmith about fitting a receiver sight to that rifle. Will require D&T, but one that will fit a flat side receiver ( 94, 336, 760) may work on your BAR.

Thanks SuperCub I was planning on stopping in at the Smith to pick his brain. I will check out New England as well

I like receiver sights and have used them in the past a fair amount. Saying that, I think a Leupold 1-4 or 1.5-5 is a far better option with a lot more flexbility.

Why no love for the red dot?

all other things being equal, irons will never be better than a reddot, other than for target shooting known size targets..

Just my .02

Because Red Dots are about as attractive on an rifle as lipstick on a pig. But that would be just my opinion of course...feel free to mount a freaking lazer sight on a double rifle... ready for fast target acquisition on the Savanna!
Pretty sure you run irons whilst dangerous game hunting in Africa...wonder why that is? Prolly cause they...um...work well?

I do like the red dot dont get me wrong, I've shot alot of deer using a red dot. I really want sights incase the battery dies while hunting as well as hunting in nasty weather

THIS ^^^^^ for the win...... they simply work all the time

Im pretty sure they run irons on a safari rifle for the traditional angel.

Lets be clear, traditional yes. The best pragmatic option available, not by a long shot.

There is a reason military/leo got away from irons a long time ago, and why irons on a secondary is quickly becoming antiquated.

They might work well, but are far far from the best option available.

When speed is king...irons are the ticket. Not fast and accurate to a goodly distance...but fast and close...see many service pistols with glass? Or shotguns...mostly not.
I'm sure the PH's run irons out of tradition...uh not likely. "Traditionally we take chances with our high paying customers...because that's how it's always been done"...
If a Holo or Red Dot was better...they'd probably run them.
Hey, OP is happy with Red Dot crack on. But up close, personal, dangerous and fast...iron's for the win in my world.

I hunted over dogs for thirty years or more, I used a peep sight for all of that time. Never had an issue. I'm a lever gun guy mostly, so the '94 wears a Williams Fool proof (Aluminum, but a tough sight) , and the 1886 wears a Redfield (steel sight, but harder to find). I hunted at close quarters, and for both rifles I removed the peep and used the threaded opening as a giant peep. I also have a peep sight as back up to the scope on my 88 Winchester.

Be sure to get a sight mounted close to the eye. You get a much larger field of view, and you get the eyesight improvement offered by the aperture that you don't get with forward mounted peeps.

Mike t, I think you’d just be better off selling that BAR, perhaps to me? Haha

I sure wish Browning hadn’t discontinued the short trac’s. I too wish they would have come with irons, and an 18.5” barrel to top it off. There’s a handy bush rifle!

I echo the mentions of a peep sight. My savage scout has a Williams rear peep, I find it quite accurate. As mentioned, it is aluminum, but I haven’t had any issues with mine.
