Good day,

I am wondering if it is possible for a smith to add basic iron sights to a Remington M700P bull barrel?

Pro's and con's ? Good Canadian source?

I no it may not be a conventional mod, but I have always liked the idea of having a back up system.

Thanks in advance Fella's

Pros and cons?

It depends on what you are envisioning as basic iron sights.

A simple front post rear notch similar to what you might see on a Remington hunting rifle are , I believe, silver soldered to the barrel. The pro would be these are simple but the con would be cost to install and finding a set that are the correct height for use on a heavy barrel as all the ones I’ve seen are on lightweight hunting barrels.

If you go the route of a globe front sight and micrometer rear sight the install is easier ( drill and tap 4 6-48 holes) but the sights and corresponding mounting blocks are more expensive and require the removal of any optical sight prior to use.

You will have to do some searching to find a gunsmith who would perform the work, and also hunt down the required parts, which in the case of the micrometer sights is harder to source in Canada.

It can be done but not a one stop shopping task.

Williams Gunsite, as an example, offers adjustable rear open sights and front sight ramps which accept dovetailed front sights, front and rear attaching to the barrel with 6-48 screws. It should not be difficult to make up a pair that would work. The rear sight should be positioned so as not to interfere with the scope when it is mounted. To use the irons, a QD mount system would be needed.

The C3 sniper rifle used a clamp on front sight and Parker Hale 5E rear sight which mounted on the rear scope base, once the scope was removed.

Most any gunsmith could drill and tap mounting holes. Cost for the work should be under $100.

Whether or not having a set of irons on a precision rifle would make sense would depend on how you are using the rifle. Personally, I can't see it. To me, a back up scope would make more sense.

What are you doing with the rifle? I prefer iron sights on all my hunting rigs as backup just incase a fall or wreck of some sort....my target rifles though dont require them as a scope failure is merely a frustration at the time but not imperative to be opperational immediately. Another option for quick sighting changes is a small red dot or even a SEEALL sight that would just mount to the rail should you have a scope failure.
Other options I have done. If the barrel is threaded you can a have a threaded cap with integrated front sight made and use a clamp on rear peep such is made by NECG. If the blade is timed correctly its a simple screw on sight system thats ready when needed..
These tupes of mods are really only needed on certain guns used in certain places for certain things....i wouldnt bother for a rifle that is just a range toy....
