So, I was gifted quite a few Factory 250gr Corelokts and some reloaded Speer 250gr handloads (im yet to pull an determine)

This was also ontop of a find online with marketplace 250gr interlocks and 3 boxes of 250gr speers........ So it sort of seems im going to have to bring the Whelen back out of retirement for winter bla bla, Close range Bush hunting the Sambar Stags / Deer.

i have a zeiss terra i was going to sell but its banged up an not fetching asking price, soo, it will soon sit atop the Ruger.

the original stock is cracked between the trigger and magazine area, it shoots like #### ... obviously i suppose.

i attempted to screw a scrw an grind it off etc, may need to re look at the fix and try again now my tool box is a bit more stocked....

i said i wasnt goin to bother with the 35 anymore, with the 30-06, but i guess it means getting a better powder for 180gr .30-06 an stoking it up alot, an im goin to just mellow the Whelen for -200m stuff, where it shines anyway haha!

thi excites me a little bit, cos i love the cartridge and can tinker with the stock usng up the 15x corelokt factorys- that 'sort of' eliminates the reload data being off plus rifle issues !?!

il pick the whelen back up from town tomorow and post up some progress

Edit*- pulling the projectiles, i found 51.8gr of most likely Varget.... and a NOSLER partition....250grainer.

il ask about those

update- ready to 'sight in' with factory corelokt 250s- which will put the money close for the NOSLERS.
all chambering nicely.

looks alright with the banger zeiss on it

How is the supply of reloading components in Australia?

fairly average for PRIMERS mostly!!!

some projectiles are difficult but seems to be standard hornady and the like around in good quantity?

some american powders may be difficult to source but ADI is around semi consistntly

It sounds better than Canada. Our dollars are about the same value as yours, primers start about $100.00 per thousand up to $170.00 for B.R. primers. Bullets are very scarce and have doubled in price. Powder when you can find it is $80.00 a lb up to $150.00.

yeh funny enough i just looked at online source an theres VERY minimal actually in most calibres.... the expensive stuff is left. sierra tmk tgk etc.

so yeh possibly a very similiar boat here-

the end is neigh

for an idea of whats on the go in aus

The 35Whelen is a very good and practical med bore for use here in Canada on larger game. It can be loaded down with 200s and used like a 30-06 or used with full (and potent) loads with 250s for the heaviest game we have. 30-06 brass will work easily and USUALLY there is a vg bullet selection.

While I am done (for now :) ) with medium bore rifles, it remains a favourite.

I have never tried a .35 of any flavour - might be next to try - hard to find room between my existing 338 Win Mag with 225 / 250 grain and 9.3x62 with 250 /286 /320 grain. But recently acquired a 17 HMR to "slide in" between 22 Long Rifle and 22 Magnum - so might eventually try similar for a .358.

Life was maybe simpler when I had a .22 Long Rifle, and a 308 Win - took care of everything in Sask., I thought - got my first elk with that 308 Win. Then, got the 338 Win Mag for "big stuff" - then got a 7x57 - and just kept going. Not a whole lot of "big gaps" left on "picket fence" from .224" to .458", any more - but that .358" is one that I do not have.

i went that 9.3 route in a lighter rifle but stoked up modernly,, it was too much for me to be comfortable placing shots, sure i could slap it off hand but i prefer comfy..duh. lol.

the ruger is so darn heavy it takes alot of the recoil i rekon..

im keen as to sight it tomorow between or in the rain .... i plan on using it wednesday morning for a few hours stroll for a meaty!

i am hoping to test both rounds for closeness of poi for 100m, n pt an c/l..

i have a real stalking buz on at the moment, so the kimber can stay for mtn hiking, the ruger 35w will replace the 30-06 for time being until i find the magazine, or buy another

I just ordered a .35 Whelen barrel for one of my '06 Tikkas. Should be interesting. I have brass and dies coming, and some 200gn Hornady RN bullets on hand, still looking out for 225s and 250s.

I shot a bear in NB last weekend using the 9.3x62- DRT. I do love the mid bores.

This is weird, Here i am again with a 35 Whelen in hand......... an ironically Without a Browning 30-06 Magazine in hand...............

Cooler news is the Whelen seems to be ready for some Action this month bush hunting big stags if i come across one.

cooler news was i eventually shot the 250gr PArtitions... an found them on the same zone as the Corelokt Factory 250gr i'd 'sighted' it in for all the while back only 3 months or so ago..seems longer.

must admit it was kind of neat opeing the other safe an pulling out a wooden stocked blued rifle......... i have alot of history with this Ruger 35whelen an hoping to make a bit more with it yet.

ive 20 loaded partitions to use , too expensive for me to ever use again but im interested in not wasting them on gongs!

the downside is i tend to flinch , well it pops it head up now an then, normally i go to the 22 for a while an 222, but this time i decided the heavy trigger of the ruger an heavy recoil can be a stern lesson in holding and squeezin......... on target!

Hooroo!!

I just completed another 35 Whelen build. Post ‘64 pushfeed action, KS Arms barrel, chromoly, 1:14 twist, No. 4 contour, 21 inch finish length. Combined this with a HS Presision stock, tan with black web colour. I built this to compliment my Featherweight Compact in 7mm08 and will use for moose(if I ever get drawn for a tag…). I like short and handy rifles as I’m not shooting anything over 300 yards here on the east coast. Relegated to factory ammo for now unfortunately…

I was at a gunshow yesterday and the only powder there was in old and collectable tins. Very, very few primers.

gees sounds awesome! whats it weigh?
only gripe with my whelen is weight but end of the day, for day hnting its perfectly fine.... i sighted at 150m today as a average, it possibly could be set up for 200m zero but sometimes it can be a tad high at 100m or so for me in tight bush, anyway that irrelevant.... im hoping to be in nicee an close to them, intercepting them from nght feeding / gullies for when they come up an reach the sun. will report back tomorow night id say

It's a pretty good bandwagon to be on. I was on a 35 kick for awhile, had them from 35 Rem to 358 STA. 358 Win and 35 Whelen seem to be the sweet spot. Definately better killers than the 30 cals, with equivalent velocities. - dan

Just thought I would add a little more. My favorite 35 has been the 350 Rem Mag. Like it even more than my 358 Norma. I've had two 350's, one in a 600 that went to Alaska. The other was built on a Mauser 98 action. 20 inch barrel, teflon coated, very comfortable minimalist sporter stock. You can push the 250's over 2600 fps. Took my biggest northern WT to date with that rifle. Easy to carry, and easy to shoot well.- dan

Big fan of the '06 case and the Whelen specifically. I've worked up loads for my Whelen with CFE223 which is somewhat available and StaBALL 6.5 for my '06 and .270 which is also sometimes on the shelves for normal prices, but man, the primers... Lack of primers is really killing my bench time and load development. Have about 500 large rifle left for about a dozen guns to share.

Although my recent bear I had a choice between a box of Gucci ammo (Federal Terminal Ascent) and a pile of spicy handloads with 180gr Accubonds or some "old junk lying around", I took some early 90's Winchester Silvertips. Sometimes I wonder why I bother with all this expensive crap!

Nelson, with a 338 an a 9.3, you dont need a 35 lol.... well a whelen anyway.

i thought i liked the whelens an such so much that i wanted a lighter one tha Ruger... fark they are heavy. anyway got a T3 9.3... no thanks. im too small framed. even with 232gr an plenty of 2208, ideallly a 286gr load at 2350-2400 is plenty for me, stokin it up to potential is not for me, but i can see how it is on 'par' with 375 hh at times.

Dan, the man.. 350 would be cool, good sambar gun, thers a 35 sambar for sale in aus at moment. custom dealio, u done one?

yeah componenet availability slows down sending projectiles into dirt, power into air an primers onto the ground.. same down here.
