Hi Folks,

I must admit, I am quite tempted by the A17 target thumbhole in 17WSM ( https://www.savagearms.com/content?p=firearms&a=product_summary&s=47800 )

I see that ammo is hard to find (as everything is)

But I certainly haven't seen the popularity of the 17 WSM rise.

Would you buy a 17WSM in 2022 or do you think it's dead?

A Canadian Tire store in Windsor was for some reason clearing out their Savage B.Mag in 17 WSM for a ridiculous price ($170) so I bought one like a month ago. Found ammo at two different Canadian Tire stores (Essex and Windsor West) - Hornady 20gr and Federal 20gr (they look the same - but the Federal was like $10 cheaper....). I bought 2 boxes of each. Only shot about 20 rounds at 100 yards with a 6-24X scope and for me it is more accurate than my bolt 22 WMR (which, some would say, doesn't mean anything!). I like it and am pleased with my purchase.

One of these years I will take it coyote hunting, but it's in the queue with my 243 Winchester and my two 22WMR rifles.

YMMV. Standard disclaimers apply.

I will eventually have one. Just need a barrel, and bolt kit, and spin it onto the receiver. Just not many building 17 wsm prefits these days, yet.

The go to longer range gopher gun.

I had to look that one up - .17 Winchester Super Magnum - is a rimfire. Not likely that you will be able to reload it - so like 17 HMR - kind of hostage to what you can find for ammo?? Buy whatever you think is "lots" of ammo when you buy the rifle - some think 100 rounds is a lot - some think 5,000 rounds is just a start. No clue what you will find where you are - I do not own one and have never looked for that ammo to buy.

I know a couple of guys out west who have them, and swear by them. One is a gunsmith who did some work to get it to shoot accurately. (bedded, barrel tuner, etc.) Like HMR, it seems to hit the right notes for some guys=lots of punch for a rimfire, fast/flat caliber, coyote-capable from what I've heard, etc. For me, it's in the 17HMR/22WMR category=a little $spendy$ for punching paper, and a capable on varmints out to 100 yards. Depending on your interest in shooting varmints, you may/may not have that requirement covered-off. (17HMR, 17 Hornet, 22WMR, etc.)

I've never shot one though, only had a chance 1X and didn't. Should have.

I have one, great caliber. Crappy rifle... bought a Browning T Bolt in 17 HMR last years... don't shoot the B mag any more. Left it tk my father. He like it pretty much.

Yes if you understand what it is and is not. Its a cheap to shoot varmit round out to 225yrds for coyotes and 250-300yds for gophers in mild to light wind. It bridges the gap from 17hmr to .17 hornet. Yet still gives you a affordable round. I bought mine for this exact reason. gives me all the punch i need for anything i would shoot out to 250yds. Yet allows it to be cheap enough that i can use it on gophers in volume.

If i was going after just Coyotes i would choose a centerfire. But it fills the gap i have between my 10/22 and .243 with out the hassle of reloading. Bmag's can be made to shoot quite well. But i would go to a Ruger in .17wsm if i had to do it over again.

That's spot on and exactly my thoughts.

Regarding the Ruger, you mean the 17/77?

What do you think of the just announced Savage A17 in 17WSM? Specifically the target thumbhole https://www.savagearms.com/content?p=firearms&a=product_summary&s=47800
