Is 38-44 antique?

Its not on the "no list" but neither is the 38 Merwin Hulbert...

The CFC is taking calibers that are close to other restricted calibers and sayin that they are "also known as"...

In other words... because the 38 Merwin Hulbert is very close to the 38 S&W they are saying it is the same cartridge...or "also known as"

...anyways, the 38-44 S&W, as in the model 3 target models...has anyone here had the CFC say its resticted or is it still considered one of the antique calibers? I know that they have given out antique letters for the 32-44 S&W but i havent heard anyone talk about the 38-44...
 
the 38-44 S&W refered to the S&W 38 Special built on the 44 frame . Cartridge cases were identical to the to the 38 Special. It could be loaded hotter because of the heavier frame and was a precurser to the 357 Magnum. The "44" in the name did not refer to blackpowder charge weight and it is not an antique. in todays nomenclature it would probably be refered to as a 38 Special +P.

^^ This answer does not apply to the 38-44 cartridge that sportee is talking about, but rather a type of gun.


I looked into this some time ago and there should be an old thread here about it.
The 38-44 S&W cartridge was introduced in 1886 and should be considered antique. 38-44 S&W Target cartridge was a special chambering for the Model 3 revolver with 1,023 produced.

Sorry guys, im not talking about the 38/44 version that Johns is talking about but the 38-44 that Smokelpole is talking about...

The original 38-44S&W was a 1.5" case with a .356 cal bullet loded completely inside the brass...nothing protruding from the top. The chamber was bored straight through and the case was intended to run the full length of the chamber to take up the lack of "step"

I used to have a pic of an original cartridge but no luck finding it...here's a pic of an original box...

I have a de-registered 32-44 S&W target . The 38-44 S&W is also considered antique just checked the FRT. it lists them as antique.
