As the title says, I just grabbed some 7.62 x 54R for my new Mosin, and when i shake any of the cartridges, it sounds like it's half empty!

I know that it's not going to be filled right solid, and even my 7.62 x 39 makes a little noise when I shake it and listen carefully (I went and checked!)... But these sound like a half filled salt shaker. I can clearly hear (and feel) the powder shaking inside the case when I shake it with my arm fully extended!

I'm not at all familiar with 7.62 x 54R, so I'm asking you guys - is this normal for this ammo, or did I get some sort of faulty rounds?

Huh, I know there should be some movement that you can hear, but not a whole lot. Basing that off of my handloaded .308, which isn't really too far off.

Do you have a bullet puller, or if you don't mind destroying a cartridge, two sets of pliers? I'd pull a handful just to be sure. Don't want to end up with some squib loads that will leave a bullet stuck in the bore, or some sort of unicorn secondary explosive effect.

Yes it should sound like that .. If you are that concerned buy a box of mfs or ther surplus and compare recoil.

A x39 is going to be packed near full as its a short case... A x54 is a huge case and would likely explode if it was packed that full.

Which surplus do you have? If you have the same copper washed stuff I so I'm willing to pull a bullet or 2 to compare if you can do the same

The powder is a bit different than North American standard. It looks more like rods than like the finer grains we're used to. Could account for 'salt shaker' sound?

It depends on the powder used. The S&B ammo I have sounds quite empty but still provides good muzzle velocity. Surplus stuff sounds less empty. Depending on which powder I use for handloading max pressure can be reached with a nearly full case or one with 1/4" or more of room left. Like the 30-06 the 7.62x54R is not a super efficient cartridge. The 30-06 was replaced with the 308 which lost quite a bit of length but only a little muzzle velocity and was generally seen as a more efficiently sized cartridge. A lot of 30-06 factory rounds also sound like there is quite a bit of empty space in there. It's normal.

What reloading wisdom did you glean that particular tidbit from? I pack my X54 cases quite full. They don't explode. Perhaps it might have something to do with the powder used, hmmm?
