is a barrel ever too clean??

Duck hunter,,,, I get just the opposite. I shoot, shoot, and shoot and get fantastic groups, then clean and the point of impact moves a bit and the group opens up till the barrell is dirty again.

Ice-Pick,
Its funny how that happens. I guess its just a matter of the different barrels. From your previous posts I suspect this is with you MacLennan barrels? There is a huge difference between Rob's barrels and Rem factory units, my .30 Cal MacLennan takes about 4 patchs to clean up usually:)

I tried various methods over the years and have decided to just let the barrel tell me what it likes.

One of my most consistent cold bore hunting rifles had a bore so rough, it was green from the copper fouling. But 1st shot at any distance from zero to 800yds was dead on. Did this test over the 5yrs I had it and it never failed to hit.

I did clean it a few times and mined out the copper till it was clean. The worse was 16 shots to return to sub MOA. I guess I took out ALOT of copper.

Another barrel would literally destroy the bullets after firing no more then 17rds. Clean it, first shot in the group which was a dead reliable 1/2 min at 200yds until rd 17 then PUFF.

With the match barrels I am using and being particularly lazy, I just push a dry patch down the bore every 40 to 60rds. Two or three and the patches are a light grey. 1st shot is in the group and accuracy is maintained.

Every now and then, I get really guilty and chem clean the bore. Doesn't accomplish much more then the dry patch but I feel better.

I believe shooters clean way too much. If the groups are as desired and repeatable, leave it alone UNLESS corrosion is a potential problem.

If you have to clean, clean only enough to restore accuracy.

I read all too often and have done it myself. Clean til the bore is bare, then take a few fouling shots before shooting for accuracy.

What do you think the bore looks like after those fouling shots?

I'm also of the shoot till it opens up ilk.I have pulled the copper out of an AR/C7 and found it shot way tighter at 500m.But its not much of a precision rifle.

I used to be anal on cleaning my rifles, mostly because thats how I was taught when I was a kid. Now I do as others mention, and clean only when my groupings open up. My Ruger likes a dirty barrel, where as my Marlin likes to be cleaned more often. So I guess you need to listen to what your rifle is telling you.

has anyone ever used boretech eliminator?? What do you think of it??

I'v used jp paste with kroil after. I brushed the barrel many times with the jp paste than cleaned it out than cleaned with kroil. After i though it was clean i used a few patches with boretech eliminator and got so much fouling out it was like i had never even cleaned the gun to start with.

This makes me think that JB&kroil is overrated and does not work great at all. I have stoped using it and i use the boretech all the time now. I do however wipe it out with the kroil after because i dont like the sticky residue that the boretech leaves behind.

it takes about 6 rounds to get the gun back on target after a good cleaning.

I use Boretech Eliminator and I stopped using JB and Iosso after I learned about this product. Excellent!

I really like the boretech eliminator, are there any other products out there that are just as good or better??? The bottle says that you can leave it in the barrel and it will nto harm anything, this makes me wounder i fthere is anythign out there that cleans copper better???

I don't clean as much as I used to but fouling attracts moisture and i don't like to leave my barrel too dirty. I spent alot of money on my rifles and like to at least half ass maintain them. If I need to shoot a few rounds for the groups to tighten up after cleaning, so be it.

I felt guilty and cleaned my 338 ruger tang safety and takes at least 10 rounds to hit paper again, now it puts 3 shots in a 1 inch square, I may never clean that barrel again until things go south. My 7mm MKII stainless appears to be a bit more sensitive to fouling. Still tryin to figure her out
