I thought I read somewhere on here that the stocks were prone to cracking aroud the bolt that secures it to the action....

Are they a good single shot beater 22?

Any of the Cooeys/Lakefields etc that I should avoid?

Thanks!!

I haven't saw one bad Cooey rifle yet. They have been around quite a long time and one or two has a crack on the stock is normal becasue you never know how people abused their gun.

They're very good little .22s, and I've never seen one crack that wasn't badly abused first.

Better than that, they are the absolutely perfect 'first' gun for kids - they must be cocked by a very definite, separate action before they can be fired...there is no doubt whatever whether it is safe or not. They do not #### simply by closing the bolt, as do most .22s.

As far as I'm concerned, they are better by far than the much more expensive Chipmunks, and the like....and you'll never shoot one out in a lifetime if you find a good one and look after it. Most shoot very well indeed.

Every single Cooey I've owned/shot, will typically shoot rings around the equivalent US brand rifle and most of them have literally seen thousands, if not tens of thousands of rounds.

The Model 39 is a great first rifle for a child. Easy to use, teach proper technique and gun handling/safety with, accurate as heck and lots of fun to shoot. I still use mine for pest control. I also rebuilt one for a local neighbourhood kid. Thanks to some very kind fellow CGN'ers who kindly donated parts (stock and bolt handle) that same kid in now a crack shot, a star Sea Cadet and looking at joing the CF upon his graduation in two years!

As I've said time and time again. Kids who grow up hunting and shooting don't knock over liquor stores of beat-up little old ladies!

I have a couple cooeys.

Two mod 60 repeaters
one 39
one 75

The 39 and 75 are just about the same gun but the 75 is the grown up version.

The 39 is a verry good gun my father had his for year's and i just found one this spring. His was in bad shape but solid original and tight action after new sight's and refinishing it's just like a new gun. Myne's still all original and tight as a new one. they both have fired and will still fire alot of round's to come.

The cracking may be from tightening the fastener too much. All I know is my 39 is an all around great gun. Slow on the reload but you're less likely to take the shot if you aren't sure.

I grew up with one and now, 30 years later, I picked up a used one for some fun....

They a great little plinkers for shooting at close range game or cans.... I had to pick up a used bolt and replace mine as the firing pin got weak on it, but its probably seen a million rounds... Plus they shoot all three S, L, LR.....

Pick up one for some fun...
