Is a direct blow back 5.7x28 AR style rifle possible?

Hello all. Here is one I have been thinking about since I heard about the release of the Ruger 57 pistol. I have always been intrigued by the 5.7x28 round but could never bring myself to spend the money on a P90 or FN57. With the Ruger coming out it got me thinking about building a direct blow back AR style rifle to chamber the round. I think in theory it would work well and would make a very fun squirrel or rabbit rifle if made on an NR platform. Thinking about it you would in theory only need;

1. New barrel
2. A properly massed bolt and stiff enough buffer spring
3. Proper bolt face/ejector for the round
4. A mag well adapter to take whatever 5.7 mag you wanted (Ruger, FN or M1 carbine with pinched lips)

It is a small round so the mass needed in the bolt would not add a huge amount of overall weight to the rifle. I think the biggest issue would be getting the mag well adapter machined as it is not available as of now that I can find at least.

If this could work on say an SLR build using a pistol magazine it would be a very fun plinking rifle and pin one mag to 5 and I think it would make a dandy of a little varmint rifle. Yes I know a .22wmr and other such very common rounds would do much the same but I like to build things and something like this would motivate me to save up and finally buy a 57 pistol. So what are your thought? Am I crazy and out to lunch? I am no gunsmith or machinist or engineer so I’m sure there is something I am over looking but I think it would be a fun cool build to try and make work.

Anything can be run through a blowback system provided their is enough mass or engineering to accomodate. The 5.7 has pretty low bolt thrust thanks to the small footprint of the case.

I don’t recall who the manufacturer was. But a few years ago Wild West had an AR that used P90 mags and ejected out the AR mag well.

I saw this in my research, it looked pretty cool but it never got picked up by the masses and I believe the company went under. CMMG does make the Banshee I believe it’s called that is a 5.7 rifle. Slick unit but a bit pricey. If you could build one on an AR or SLR then it would just be another upper and buffer/spring change back to whatever caliber you wanted.

Considering p90 is a blow back design I would say yes, the weight would be the issue p90 carrier is 609g and typical ar15 carrier are about half that.
