Is a STI Trojan good enough for IPSC?

Hello,

I am new to the sport of IPSC (in fact I have not done my BB yet). Would a STI Trojan be competitive in Standard div? Could it be used in production?

Thanks

It COULD be competitive in standard, but there are better options around in my opinion, such as an STI double stack gun as opposed to single stack.

Also, you could not shoot it in Production since it must be a double action first shot.

I considered the "2011" models but sadly I cant afford them :(
The only double stack I can afford is one of Marstar's Bul-M5's.. Would they be competitive?

Who cares what division your in after the fact. If you like a certain pistol and you want to buy it and compete with it - go for it. You will be happier in the end.

If you really need a Production pistol check out this link.

There is no earthly reason why you couldn't...
But making the single stack 10 round mags work well can be problematic.
The Trojans are lovely guns...accurate, reliable..,but at a disadvantage in
Standard class.
If you don't mind this...knock yourself out..but don't expect to set the IPSC
world on fire!;)

if you are just starting out, chances are you won't win no matter what gun you use, so find a gun you like, and use it, in whatever division that gun happens to fall into. After you get a little experience, and learn a lot, if you want to try and be competitive, that's when you look around - you'll know a lot more than...

(I know nothing about SA Std guns, so I can't comment on this particular make/model).

Why not use Glock 17 or Sig 226 in production?

The STI Trojan would not be competitive at the master/grand master grade levels, the Double stack magazines are simply easier to load. Here in OZ we are restricted to ten round magazines as well. I haven't seen anyone shooting at the upper levels with a single stack. There are a bunch of single stacks in the lower grades.

The Bul M5 IPSC model is competitive against the STI 2011 frames, Our national grading officer regularly places in the top three in Standard Division using one. I would hesitate to buy a base model Bul, it really needs the magwell, adjustable sights & ambi safety for IPSC work.

If you get a Trojan, buy a Smith & Alexander magwell. This will help with your reloads.

In summary, the Trojan is a good quality firearm, you can have fun with it, but if you want to move up the grades, buy something else.

To help put this in perspective for you...

I started shooting IPSC with a 1911 frame Std gun... When I switched to a double stack I took almost a full second off my reload time. 3 seconds and change down to 2 seconds and change. No practice, just did it.

But don't worry, you won't be competitive your first year shooting IPSC anyway... Unless you are willing to dedicate a LOT of time and money to practice. Most top competitors fire tens of thousands of round per year in practice and do even more dry fire.
