I tried to order some ammo from a site sponsor and was told it is considered hazardous goods now. They want a $45 upcharge on top of regular shipping fee. Is anyone else seeing this on small quantities (5 boxes) ?

That's not bad .. try getting some powder shipped from Cabela's , the shipping cost for hazardous goods is about $70/lb and that's just the shipping!

I'd say maybe 1/3 of the ammo orders I've made had a $40-ish charge for dangerous goods or whatnot. 2/3 of the time there was no extra fee for it. I don't know why some do and some don't.

Last time I asked about shipping ammo with UPS they gave me a list of all kinds of fees and charges for dangerous goods. I've heard of many people shipping with Canpar without any extra fees. Maybe different couriers treat ammo differently?

Shipping ammo is going to be expensive anyway one looks at it.
The first thing is the weight of the pkg and then the size of the pkg as well.
I have spent some time today trying to re-familiarize myself with CanPar and the web page.
I found this though stuff that can not be shipped or they choose not to ship...https://www.canpar.ca/en/ship/what_not_ship.jsp

Then there is the section on what they will not ship by air...

A shipment is deemed unacceptable for air transportation if:

It is classified as hazardous material, dangerous goods, prohibited or restricted articles by IATA (International Air Transport Association), ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), ADR (European Road Transport Regulation on dangerous goods), any applicable government department or other relevant organization.
It contains counterfeit goods, plants, animals, bullion, currency, banderols/tax stickers, bearer form negotiable instruments, precious metals and stones; real or imitation firearms, parts thereof, weapons, explosives and ammunition; human remains, ####ography, illegal narcotics/drugs, aerosols/flammable liquids (including but not limited to: dry ice, nail polish remover, nail polish, lighters and perfume) or any other item which Canpar Courier and its partners decides cannot be carried safely or legally...

I could not find the section about shipping ammo via ground though, so maybe someone who has shipped with them recently can speak to this action.

To answer the first question as to what is hazmat materials ?
The answer is here somewhere...http://http://www.ihmm.org/about-ihmm/what-are-hazardous-materials

Best Regards,
Rob

really?

Sorry, I should have elaborated. Yes, understood that Canada post can not be used for ammo. This was going to be a courier, Loomis or Purolator is what Wolverine offers. I called them and they told me a local courier was busted for having hazmat undeclared; So now everyone has to pay the hazmat fee on any ammo shipment. $45 hazmat + $35 shipping. I thought I saw somewhere that as long as the package was marked in some way (red diamond ?) it was good (no hazmat $)

All I want is some 308 Gold medal match so I can practice shooting again...

Almost sounds like ordering from Cabellas. I tried to order black powder percussion caps, 2 tins worth. Total weight of whole shipment, 100 grams including the tins the come in. I got a call from Cabellas saying that shipping would be $56 due to the danger of the goods and asking if I'd like them to ship them... I had to ask "Are you serious? $56 to ship $10 worth of goods and you ask if I still want them? NO!" haha

Some shops like Wanstalls/Tradex have flat shipping rates on everything, $15/$25 etc so you wouldn't see the extra charges if you bought stuff from them with and without ammo.
