Just curious to know if anyone is using the 200gr Round Nose Hornady for hunting in their 358win,...if so how fast are you pushing them? I know these bullets are designed more for the 35rem,.. but I am wondering how they hold up at 358 Winchester velocities.

Thanks

I used one box, when I ran out of the 200 SP's... they shot to a similar POI, and while I didn't chrono them, I used the same recipe and accuracy was good. I have since switched to the 200 FTX on deer and 225 Partitions on larger game.

Thanks beretta boy and hoytcanon,.....they were the answers I was hoping for. I have shot a couple deer with the 200gr SP and they worked great, but I picked up a box of the RN and would like to try them,...(there's just something I've always liked about a RN bullet),... I was worried they might fail at 2400-2600 FPS,...my shots are generally close range, 40-100 yards. I load the 200gr SP over 47gr of IMR3031 and I am guessing,(no chrono), that they are running about 2600 FPS out of my BLR,..so I might cut the charge back to 45gr to slow them down to 2400-2500 FPS and see how accurate they are. Does this sound about right,.. or am I way out in left field?....(I got to get a chronograph), lol.

Thanks again guys.

PS,..I guess I should mention that these will be used on deer only.

I would bet your SP load with 3031 is running under 2500 fps... it has been a few years since I chronoed my .358 loads, but I was getting more velocity and better accuracy with 49 grains of Varget, compared to 49 grains of 3031... contrary to what the books may say... this was out of an M77 22" barrel. I would not think that you will need to reduce your loads... any SP load that I have come up with shoots equally well with equal weight RN's... this will likely not always be the case, but it has been my experience. I generally only go to a flat based RN when I want to increase weight but am working with a restrictive maximum OAL.

Thanks hoytcanon,....I think you are right,....my old Hornady manual says 44.9gr of 3031 is pushing the 200gr at 2500 from a 22" bbl,....so I guessed that 47gr would push it close to 2600 from a 20" bbl,...but I just looked on the Hodgdon site and they show a 49gr compressed load of 3031 pushing the 200gr at 2630 fps,..so I guess my guess was wrong lol,...I've got to get a chrono.

Thanks again,..this is why this site is so great,...ask a question....get a solid knowledgeable answer.

shot several moose with hornady 200 gr RN 56.5gr 3031 in 35-284 worked excellent!

Right on ljc,.......35-284, hmmm,...don't think I've ever heard of one before,...I guess the ballistics would come close or equal to the 35 Whelen,...until you get into the heavy bullets. It sounds like a good round,..and those 200gr bullets must be movin right along with 56.5 gr of 3031.
