Hi there,

I really would like to purchase an AR-15 here, but I just can't get over the fact we are limited to 5 rounds per mag. Its hard to justify spending 1200+ on a rifle when that is the case. How do you guys feel about it?

I feel that a little research on your part would turn up that the AR can indeed use a 10rd pistol mag and that 2 of them can be coupled together to make 20rds thus making it worth while.

Don't care. More rounds I would like, but I can work with 5. Helps with reload drills, thats for sure.

Besides, there are 10rnd pistol mags you can use. -edit- ^beat me to it.

Of course you want an AR15 even if it's just 5. Of course the LAR15 10 rnds mags are better.

Most won't admit it, but tacticool rimfire 22s will teach most the important "tactical" lessons on the range without being classified restricted, limited to 5 rounds, or costing big $ for the thousands of rounds required to become very skilled. The recoil from a 223 is not a big issue to be gotten used to. In reality, 5 rounds at a time plus many mag changes teaches more good things than blasting through 30 rnds at a time. Carrying and shooting the C7/M16 as an infantryman I found there was rarely any need for blasting many rounds down range like a machine gun. There are tools for that, which even if legal, almost no one could afford to feed regularly. An AR in Canada is a range queen; if the mag restriction is your reason for not buying one, perhaps it's less of a firearm to you, and more of a fashion accessory.

I am sure you know how we all feel about mag limits. You will still have fun with the rifle.

Uh, if you think the biggest downfall of the AR15 is the mag limit, I've got news for ya!

Restricted Status is what keeps me away.

A CZ858 and surplus is a much more enticing gun these days, especially with the 10 round mag conversions!

get the AR,
5 rnds, or 10 for RRA lar10 pistol mags,
through a .22 conversion kit in there, slap on a 20+ or 50 rnd drum mag
and thats almost as fun as the fabled "happy switch"

levers are fun too, I missed a chance to buy a nice lever 45-70 that i still regret :p

Can't get over it?

If you want the rifle, and if you can afford it, get the rifle. While you are spending your money, send a few dollars to the CSSA and/or the NFA, which are a big part of the gun lobby in this country. They work every day, both nationally and internationally, to preserve our rights to possess and use arms. Get involved with them. Join, donate, attend their fund raisers, volunteer.

But don't just rely on these organisations. Get political yourself, as much as you can. Get to know your MP and MPP (MLA?) personally.

If you get the AR (or even if you don't), be sure to take some non shooter friends to the range with you, and teach them to shoot; put some thought into it beforehand, make it fun, and chances are they will have such a good time that they will also become shooters.

By becoming active in these ways, you might just see a day where the AR platform is taken off the restricted list. Heck, you might even see a day where there is no restricted list at all! In short, to quote Winston Churchill,

Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never -- in nothing, great or small, large or petty -- never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

Shooting is expensive, Period. More accuracy equals more cash. Stick to what you can afford, within this hobby or not. You'd probably sh*t yourself if you had any idea what some of us actually spend in a month. If you can't afford it, don't buy it.

You could always buy an XCR, an SL8 or non restricted ACR and use LAR mags. Personally, I'm waiting for Robinson to release a pistol version of the XCR-M - that'll mean 10 rounds of 308 in a non-restricted black rifle.

Exactly the same thing here.

I live out in the country so to be able to take it in my back yard or pasture and shoot it is a must.

An XCR (or other NR black rifle) is much more something I could justify if I had the cash.

Besides a tacticool rimfire is cheap to shoot, no mag limits and most are also non-restricted.

Should the day come that AR's could be de-restricted (or otherwise allowed to be shot places other than approved range) I would buy one in a heartbeat.

dont be discouraged about 5 round mags, i dont even use the 10 round ones and when i go ot the range its hard to stop shooting my AR it is so fun to shoot! 3o rounds would be sweet but its not a real big deal when you having so much fun shooting the rifle. If you arent concerned about it being a restricted rifle dont let the mags stop ya from getting one. As harsh as our laws are some american states laws are way worse and who know maybe some day mag capacity laws will be scraped especially now with our beutiful conservative canada.
