Hi. Tried calling the hunting reg hotline to no avail. Maybe you could help answer this question.

Is it legal to use a 10 rnd Lar pistol mag for hunting coyote in southern Ontario?

Thanks in advance!

This an AR 15 type rifle? If so, not so, given it's a restricted weapon and the government is sure you'll get into all kinds of trouble under the guise of hunting coyotes, or whatever. ;)

Grizz

Maybe he is using a T97 and Lar-15 mags. That was going to be my Coyote rifle since thats what I have that is non restricted in that caliber, but I cant use a rifle in the area I want ti kill them.

However, I thought using a semi auto for hunting you were legally restricted to 5 rounds??? Or is that all part of the magazine deal where the mag can hold more rounds if designed for a pistol? Or again, is the pistol mag in a rifle only legal on the range or for target shooting, with hunting being excluded from that rule?

most regions yote's are deemed pests and thus not regulated hunting... I know a guy that wackes them all the time here in Alberta with his Tar21...

I'm hunting with my non-restricted RA XCR. Currently I use a 5 round mag and that does the trick just fine. Seeing as I usually only need 1 shot. Posed the question out of interest more than necessity. That said from what I read from the regs here in southern Ontario it doesn't say you CAN NOT use them.

I will attempt to contact the regulations hotline again come Monday. Will post findings. Thanks for all the help this far!

I don't think its legal. I'm sure you can't have more than 5 rds. 1 in chamber and 4 in the mag , you should call the MNR to verify.

It is legal in sask I don't know about Ontario but if you go to Queens Printer for your province you should be able to find the relevant acts and regulations for your province. As for phoning and asking advice you may get different answers every time you call. For certainty you should directly read the regulations.

With respect to your question regarding how many rounds of ammunition you can legally have in your magazine

for a semi auto rifle. Below are the restrictions on firearms which allows semi- automatic but prohibits automatic, controls use of full metal jacket bullets etc. Restrictions on the number of rounds of ammunition in your magazine is controlled federally under the federal firearms act.

i can provide the full email if you PM me

Legal in BC, for now, and why not?

I don't get mag limits for hunting, when there's already bag limits for hunting ie. 2 round limited mags in shotguns. Would love a history lesson on the evolution of shotgun magazine limits for hunting.

Migratory Bird Treaty of 1918, Is why it exists on migratory birds both here and the US. The limits on upland game and deer hunting are provincial in nature and thus vary from prov. to prov.

MNR does not restrict magazine size for hunting with the exception of shotguns, which must be plugged at 2 (plus one in the chamber).

Therefor, if it is legal to own that magazine, its legal to use for hunting.

No need to call the the MNR, everything you need to know is in the regs! There is absolutely nothing in there saying there is a minimum for center fire rifles. Only restriction is on shotguns and that is 2 plus 1.

Why does everyone ask this question if you have taken you gun/hunting course you should know this . Semi automatic firearms must only have a mag capacity of 5 rounds when hunting .....exception is the .22 rim fire. All other rifles are fine. Shotguns must be pluged to have a mag capacity of 2 rounds while hunting. So your old .303 enfields are fine with their 10 round clips as they are a bolt action rifle.
