Is it me, the rifle or the scope

I have an olded Lakefield MKII that I've been trying to zero a scope on but have had no luck:( :( . I mounted the scoped and used a Bushnell magnetic boresight to get it close at home. I zeroed it at 2.5" high at 100 yards to try and accomodate some of the drop. Went to the range yesterday and I couldn't even scare a target let alone hit it. It was all over the place from the dirt to God only knows where:mad:   . I tried making some adjustments there and still had no luck. I gave up after that and went home:( :( . The scope is a Tasco 3x9x42. I'm going to re-boresight tonight. Is it me, the rifle, the scope or am I just retarded. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks,
Ace

How far were you trying to zero at. I find i start a new rifle at 30yds. then when it is close i move to 75 etc until i reach the desired distance.

If at 30 yards your not hitting the paper, i would think it's the scope. I've had scopes that the cross hairs got stuck in. Before you re-zero, watch through the scope as you turn your dials, you should be able to see the cross hairs move. If they are moving, then it's time to look at your setup of your rifle and how you have the scope mounted.

I'll second the mounts. If in doubt, remove the scope and rings all together, and remount the whole setup. Seeing as you have your scope off, give it a shake and see if it rattles. :):p A light rap on the side can sometimes free up sticky crosshairs. I emphasize light. More like a tap with the knuckle, not a smash with a hammer.

You might have over adjusted to scope as well. Sight it in at no more
than 58 yds, where is crosses the line of flight before falling off.
2.5" High at 100 yds is a pretty high adjustment.

Once you check that all is well, take a small pen light , anything bright and small. Set it up across the room. bolt out , have the rifle in a craddle(large carboard box with cut outs) center the light in the bore, bring the light into the center of the reticle, have it lined up perfect windage, and a bit low on the elevation . If the scope is set on low power its a bit easier. You will be on paper, maybe even in the 10 ring:) Oh after adjusting, re check center in bore, and in reticle without any gun movement.:D

I just finished doing that with my Mosin: the barrel has to point 10" lower than aimpoint at 25 yards, then some 3" lowered it at 50 yards. This is a gun with a lot of recoil, if your recoil is moderate to low then your aimpoint should be closer to the line of barrel, but still above it.

Thanks guys! I'm going to check the mounts and rings. Then I'll re-boresight and use a laser pointer or light as suggested by Levi. Hopefully I'll have a better day out next time. I'll also try and get some short range shooting, 50 yards and under, in as well.

Thanks Again!
