Hi folks,

A fellow gunnutter suggested I may want to consider refurbing a sporter DCRA conversion No4. The barrel has been cut. So the question is, how impossible is it to find somewhere in this country, a spare barrel? I mean, if it is somewhat remotely possible, I may begin a quest....

THanks,

Lou

Was that a DCRA action or just the bolt Lou?

I've found a few of those barrels over the years, some serial numbered some not. The old DCRA guys usually have that sort of stuff, but most are passing on now.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I feel that there are a few PM's coming to some fine CGN members soon....

I think the easiest would be to swap the barrel and then dress up the resulting barrel action with spare No4 wood I have here...

It's well worth restoring as the DCRA's are part of Enfield history. Since the original barrel is on the rifle and numbered to the bolt and receiver you could add a section to the muzzle to get full length. I've seen a few originals back bored so a bored out barrel extension would essentially do the same thing.Your cheapest option.

You could rebarrel if a barrel surfaces. I don't know any one making a 30 cal barrel in No4 profile.

I like that idea, Ron. Not sure though, that with a 22" barrel, it would be ideal - if the barrel was just missing an inch... Do you think a 3 inch extension could be feasible and work ok?

(Sounds like a question I could ask my wife... :D )

Here in the U.S. Lou we call that a pipe dream.........................................Laugh2

I have a chunk someone sawed off about an inch behind the fore sight lugs, but you'd have to counter-bore it obviously, if you didn't want it to get launched the first time you fired.

The barrel was like new, so now it is cut to No5 specs. - long term project.

If you need something longer than that, I wouldn't bother as you'll never replicate the CAL markings. Next best fun would be to make a 7.62mm No.5 or a "tanker" No.4 out of it.

I know those barrels are out there - I know someone with 2 complete parts sets for "new" Lee Enfield rifles in 308 that both have new DCRA barrels waiting for them. The barrels were definitely available to shooters 30 years+ ago.
