Good day,

I did a search but was unable to find an answer.

Is it possible to top load detachable sks mags from stipper clips?

I understand there are Tapco and metal (don't know the brand name) duck-bill detachable mags. Do either allow you to top load with the mag attached to the rifle?

Thanks in advance,

Sam

They function the same as the hinged floorplate when installed, top feeding with stripper clips and holding the bolt open, and when removed can be loaded by hand like an AK/VZ mag.

I have a Russian SKS with a Tapco stock and magazines. For me, stripper clips load very poorly. There is literature out there if you search for it, but in a nutshell I found that the feed lips needed to be modified to get the stripper clips to feed properly into the magazine. Here is a link to a pic describing the change that needs to be made:

Essentially, you need to match the notch the Tapco mag's feed lips so it matches the notches of the stock box magazine.

Even after doing this, it's not perfect. I get 4 rounds in and the last will only partially load, then pop out. I found that with use, this effect diminishes.

I hope that helps someone out there.

Anyone?

I just obtained a ATI Dragonuv stock and am trying to figure out which magazines will work best and allow me to load with stripper clips as well. Metal or Tapco?

I've never used metal ones, but with the plastic ones everything sadosubliminal says is true.

Thanks.

Anyone know which dealers sell metal sks mags? I'm on CGN mobile therefore no dealer banners/links are displayed.

I heard only bad things about the metal mags and only have good things to say about the plastic tapco ones.

I sell tons of tapco and tons of metal duckbill ones. Some people love tapco some people hate it, same for metal. In any case we care both in our inventory. You have to try it to love it or hate it.

Cheers,

Tapco mags work, but they quickly wore out their appeal to me.
Maybe in america, it'd be cool with a full 20rds, but they also have access to ak47s and vz58s with 30rd magazines.
I just don't see teh point.

Just out of curiosity, did you have to make any modifications to your sks to make the tapco mag fit? (sanding the mag well etc) I like the look of the tapco mag with the original wood stock, but I don't really want to permanently modify my sks in any way. Also, is your sks a Russian model?

It's a 51' Tula Russian painted refurb. I had to sand down the stock a bit whee the mag fits and cut a bit into the mag at a few contact points. Even if you sand the stock, it's in the inside so you can go back to the original mag without any problems.

loading

I find when loading with striper clips...I have to slightly hold the top of the striper clip "back", and then the bullets go straight into the Tapco mag. If I dont , they dont go in properly. I like mine, and once you learn the "trick" zero problems loading. Hope this helps.:D
