I'm intersted in getting into long range shooting. I have an Browning A-bolt target rifle with boss in 22-250. With a 8.5 x 25 Varix 3 target scope. Do I have a chance or do I need to upgrade.

current setup is nice but way out classed. if you want to stand a chance your looking at 2-4000$ for a decent competitive setup optics and all.

rebarrel the abolt upgrade the stock and get better glass and you could save your self alittle money. with all that work your better off getting a new setup my 2 cents

Where are you? It may qualify for the Factory/sporter class, in which case is most certainly IS competitive. DO NOT go buying a new rig before you have a chance to come to a match and find out for yourself. You will learn more in one afternoon of schmoozing with REAL shooters, than you will from the pages of drivel you can find on many forums.

Take Obtunded's advice. You need to come to a match with the equipment you have and see for yourself what does and does not work. Your rifle is adequate for a beginner. if you find you are really enjoying yourself you may decide to invest in different equipment.

In the meantime, there's no point whatsoever in investing a bunch of money until you know what you want and need. You are far better served spending your time and $ on ammo, practice sessions and match fees than the "best" equipment recommended by internet experts.

I don't know where you are located but most provincial rifle associations run intro programs for novice long range shooters. Check one of those sessions out before you spend another nickel on equipment.

+1 on hauling out the rig and taking some pokes.

My first stab at it was with a bubba'd lee enfield that I scoped the night before. I used the case my spotting scope came in as my "front rest" once I realized you could have a front rest.

Needless to say, I didn't win; But I got hooked.

Thanks for the advice I live in southern Alberta. I don't know any one that competes in long range comps. Is there anything close and what to I need to come play or what distance do I need to practice at.

Yes, Dustina. The Alberta Provincial Rifle Association has an outstanding range and a great fullbore shooting club at their Homestead Range just south-west of Cochrane. They have regular matches there in the Spring through fall, including introductory days. I would do a search on CGN here for "scout" and "Inspector" and introduce yourself to these guys. They can tell you when they are having their get-togethers.

Furthermore, although in BC, I try and get out there to shoot a couple of matches per year and I would be more than willing to let you use one of my extra guns. Bring your gun to try it and see how it holds its own, and then you can try one of mine. We can dsicuss realistic pros and cons, you can see many different types of guns in action, and you can chat with all the shooters. I seem to know most of them, so I will introduce you and you'll be a pro in no time!

Best of all, you will get to meet Henry Rempel, one of the finest gun builders going, and he is a great guy to get to know if you wish to have any upgrades done to your gun.

Ian aka Obtundedededodadoda (or whatever he is calling himself these days~sound familiar IH? ;) ), Les aka PrairieGuy and Jerry aka Mysticplayer have all given you great info above, as have the others I do not know personally.

22s with std twists are designed for varmints and lighter bullets. At 300M it could be very competitive if you have done your homework and she holds .25 to .30 moa for 10 shots. They will do ok(mid-pack) out to 600 yds if you really know how to read the wind and hold or dial the windage on with light bullets, bin dar ~ 52g FB at 3750 fsp in a .300" long 22BR and a 14 twist, and even then, at 600 she held a great waterline but used the entire target horizontally da day at Nokomis SK :) Now screw on a fast twist and use 80g or 90g VLD bullet at these velocities and you again could be very competitive.

Like Ian said, bring her out, shoot it, talk to da boys, try a few of the other rifles there if you can and go from there. You will be hocked on your 1st :sniper: VBull
