I'm planing to get my first rifle. So I was thinking of getting a savage axis 308 because the ammo is not that expensive and I could also use it as a hunting gun (instead of a 223). Is it a good idea? I want to try target shooting and if I like it may be get a reloading kit (looking at the hornady classic) I don't want to invest on a higher end rifle right now because I'm not sure how I'll like shooting (well I loved shooting a C7 but that an other story).

Is ..... Never mind....

Maby you should barrow a gun to try first if your not sure that you will like shooting.

The axis is a great hunting rifle and is cheap due to the way they make it. One thing it however is not is a target rifle.
If you want to target shoot more than anything keep looking. The axis will not give you the groups you want. Your skills will out grow the gun to quick.

If you loved the C-7 then you should love shooting anything (well most firearms). I'm not sure if the Axis can be upgraded the way a Stevens/Savage 10 or Rem 700 can. If you want cheap as a starter then buy a .22lr. If you must have a centerfire .223 is the only way to go. If it's centerfire get a Stevens 200 or a Savage (spend more get more options. trigger, mag, and stock) the 10/110 action used by both is a snap to upgrade if you like punching paper. If you want to hunt you could get a .308 but if it's paper .223 is the place to start. From there...

I have the Axis in 223 and like it for shooting paper. The trigger is heavy but consistent. Groups are consistently under 1" at 100 yards after I started reloading.

The down side is there is not much room for improvement. If you want a rifle that you can modify spend a little more. For me, this suits my purpose of learning to shoot well at low investment.

Maybe I'll just leave it alone ;)

You remind me when I was 14 and wanted to get my first blow job. The red head from across the hall, the cute chubby dumb blond girl from gym class or maybe my third cousin, decisions decisions. In the in the end I just jerked off. Man I wish the internet was around back then so that someone could tell me what to do.

Where are you located?

If it's Southern Ontario get the .223, or possibly the .243 if you think you might go up North to hunt deer. You can't hunt here with the .308 anyways, and can't shoot anything but varmints with a rifle no bigger than a .270 around here.

Deer is shotgun only.

Even if you aren't from Southern Ontario starting with a .308 might be detrimental to your learning curve.

.223 is the best idea if you just want to hit the range, but if you want to try your luck hunting deer, or coyotes a .243 is a perfect beginners gun.
