Is my scope enough? (4-16X40 with a long distance 300WM rifle)

I was just wondering. If using a 300 Winchester Magnum - chambered professional long distance rifle (so for the sake of the argument, let's call it a 300WM sniper rifle, with high precision), is a 4-16X40 scope enough for most distances?

At what distance will I start crapping out? If I want to shoot 800 yards, should I be looking at a 6-24X50 in the future? Or can I stick with the 4-16X40? Sorry, I have not shot that far before and you like to know what some experienced shooters know.

Thanks in advance, you guys are a great bunch with lots of great answers (I have never made a gun related decision without asking around here first!)

"...the 4-16X40..." It's plenty. Use 190 grain match bullets.
"...call it a 300WM sniper rifle..." Scoping a rifle doesn't make it a sniper's rifle. How heavy is the barrel?
