My Win. 92 .44-40 bore slugs .428 and my 2nd. gen. Colt .427 But i have used .429--240G Moly coated hard cast for years with no leading or preasure problems. I also think the heavier--longer projectile with that extra bearing surface is a bonus for better accuracy and do's a better job on hogs. just my 2 cents worth. .45-90.

To Bad the 44 40s on that CFC Caliber list for handguns.
I would like to have a 44 40 hand gun one of them S&Ws DA Frontiers!
isnt it and old Caliber 1870s or so?
I could get one but it would have to be registered so i wont bother.
A 44 40 Rifle in single shot would be OK tho.

Have a pair of Merwin & Hulbert "pocket models" in 44 winchester as the 44-40 was originaly called. One needs .425 bullets as anything larger will not chamber.
Loading for the 44-40
The current issue of 'Handloader' magazine has an article on loading for the 44-40, handgun, rifle and dual purpose loads.
Mike Venturino has also written on loading for the 44-40 in several articles and books, notably 'Shooting the lever Guns of the Old West'.
The powder recommended is Unique, but I have had excellent results in my Uberti Henry and '66 with 6 grs of Red Dot and a commercial (Bullet Barn) 200 gr. RNFP.
Two of my CAS associates shoot BP in their carbines and revolvers with great success. They do it for the history and nostalgia.
It is infinitely more so suited than rifle/carbines in 45 Colt. I've yet to see ejected 45 cases that weren't blackened and smudged due to a poor seal in the chamber. Some of these guys are also shooting very light bullets in the 45 as well.
By the way - 6 grs Red Dot is also a good powder in the 45 Colt, but lately I've switched over to Trail Boss which my 44-40s don't like ......

I have a Winchester model 92 made in 1914. (SRC) It slugs out at .429 I shoot Winchester 200 grain jacketed flat points at 1600fps with 2400 powder. I have all the gear I need to build a decent cast load and will do so when the weather warms up towards spring to cast and shoot. I have killed a deer this year with it using factory 200 grain loads. IT WORKS! And it is fun to shoot. I am now on look out for a .38-40.......

For some reason the old .32-40 was not popular down here and we dont see a lot for sale as we do the .32-20 & .44-40. I have a nice (I keep getting told its too nice condition to be shooting it) old Remington model 14-1/2 in .38-40 and with a stout load of Re-7 and a 180g jhp its deadly on pigs. One day i will luck onto a nice Win. 92 in that caliber. Cheers .45-90
