Is the DA556 reliable?

The Norinco/DA are decent entry level rifles for the price, but with the current fire sale pricing on American built ARs from S&W (M&P II), Bushmaster, etc., I don’t know why anyone would choose the former over the latter. The American ARs will absolutely offer better fit and finish, be in spec and will undoubtedly hold their resale value, comparatively speaking, over the Chinese product.

They're very reliable, first hand experience. I had one and was extremely reliable and even shot well at 500 yards.
I attended a carbine course on a muddy cold rainy long day, one guy ran a Norc and it was the most reliable gun on course that day, all the fancier tighter guns (myself included) started having stoppages after a few hundred muddy wet rounds, but the Norc kept chucking along without failures.

Its one of my fave guns because it is made to the old spec M-16a1 from vietnam. also it has a chrome barrel. cant go wrong.
