Is the Elcan a good choice for an AR carbine?

I am looking at an Elcan C79 for my carbine. Is the latest generation worth $1200.00? Thanks for any advice.

Depends what you need it for.

I think the newest generation of Elcan bases are good, but anything previous to Gen 4 is considered a bit weak.

The glass on the Elcan is second to none.

4th Gen Elcan is a good scope but you would need to say what you want to do with it to get better advice on here about what to use.

You need ACOG! Actually I think someone is even offering one for sale in the Equipment Exchange forum for a generous price. I thinks it's even a TA31F military model designed to work with 14.5" carbines. Oh wait, that's my ad!

ELCAN's rock in our Tac Carbine matches. So do the ACOG's. It all depends on your budget and your comfort level....

Get what works for you and your shooting game (also your budget).

based off the elcan sight on our c7 I say they arent worth the money. I havent found anything special about them except the glowing dot at the top of the post. ( Im sure civy model doesnt have) The dot basically destorys your nightvision so whats the point of it.

I would not pay $1200 for an Elcan, even bfn.
Gently used Elcans in the $700 +/- range are a good choice if you can't stomach the $1200 for a new or next to bfn ACOG.

The Tritium triangle on the Elcan destroys your night vision:rolleyes: news to me.

I've used the tritium equiped Elcan at 400m in the dark and was really impressed with it. You sort of have to aim while not looking directly at the target which is tricky to get used to but once you have it you can get the hits in on a fig11 just fine.

I don't know if the 4th generation Elcan mounts are any better than the 1st and 2nd gen I used back in the day, but for my money, I'd skip the Elcan and move straight to an ACOG if my mind was set on a fixed power optic.

If money wasn't an object, it'd be a Short Dot.

I heard that NF NXS 1-4X with the dot-circle recticle is a good choice too. Priced between the S&B shot Dot and ACOG

How does the US Optics SN12 Rapid Response measure up to these? Haven't seen one up close to compare unfortunately but have heard good things.

elcan

used the elcan in afganistan the new generation is good but by no means worth the money, if they wern't issued I would'nt use it. Buy a used acog or an aimpoint not elcan.

My preference, I really dont like the Elcan; I wouldn't pay anything for it. I wouldn't suggest going with the aimpoint either as it gives off quite a glowing red signature to the front. Eotech would be my first choice (within the smaller price range) or if your willing to spend more, a trigicon. The best thing about that is if something happens to it you can use back up iron sights without even having to take the eotcech off.

I wouldn't even call those pieces of crap sites. If there'es even anything left of them after a couple excercises or missions, u still cant hit sh!t with them.
There is really just nothing I like about the Elcan, and I have used it A LOT.
